    Default long hair?

One thing that bothered me about the movies, why do the men have almost as long hair as the women? But, it did not decrease from the movie, but ummm its just that women do not like men with long hair. Just like when I see women with really short hair, I kind of cringe. What do ya think, does it really matter, or does it kind of make men ineffeminate in the movie?

I think it's a dark age thing: In early medieval times, short hair meant servitude, only the nobles were allowed to wear long hair and beard (also see the shaving of the monks and priests as gesture of humility).

And I think you generalize a bit too much when you say women don't like men with long hair. That's more a matter of culture and habit - and even peronal taste since even today I know of some examples of the opposite...

Men often have long hair both in real history and in Tolkien's world, and there's nothing effeminate about it. And it's not true that women don't like men with long hair, it's very silly to make such generalizations. Such tastes and fashions change in different times and cultures.

Also, I have long hair too.

Well iI myself don't like girls haveing short hair, but I don't understand why girls shouldn't like men with long hair ?!?
Also lots of male models have long hair, just like boromir, or aragorn....
    And bearts...
Well I think bearts like rohan's in the movies are in the american and europeen culture just out of fashion...
But i have a beart myself (of course no "big" one )

Why do you generalize that ??
And the thing about the medieval times when it was normal to have long hair, and that Tolkien's world is more or less a medieval world with dependence on the real world is already said...

    Its wrong to generelize it...

The person's culture has a large impact in it, but also personal choices, "tastes"...

And also as said, most men would simply cut when the hair got a little to long but left the major part alone, as i don't think a medium class "citizen" in the dark ages would bother much with it, a soldier for example...

Only nobles would bother messing with the hair, and even then, only to look "pretty" at feasts and such, largely they didnt bother, whi should they? They had to fight quite frequently so death was near everyday...

Its wrong to generalize what people like, and so were you. Many people, and so as I, saying that many women like men with long hair, and I know a lot of women who told me that for guys long hair is much better then short.

I had long hair until 3 weeks ago too , but got tired of it and now I have short hair .

Greetz from one ed up tatooed nast to another

Would be a pity if everyone would have the same taste, especially if this taste prefers a differend
    style than your own.

Bud you dont know my wife very well then and most of my female friend love us with long hair so I think its a matter of where you live and who you hang around "most of us are bikers so long hair is the style for us guys" but I do agree on what your saying about females with short hair does seem a little out of wak though, but normally it doesn't bother me

Yeah, I would not really say Aragorn had the "long hair," I think his hair fits his role. I mean he travels a lot, uses a lot of energy, I think it would look really strange if they had military cut hair. So, I think for the most part having a long beard, etc makes sense. Though I think Elrond and Legolas would be the ones that I think "too much, makes no sense." Legolas looks to feminine, elrond at least has a masculine looks. But, overall the only reason why it never looks bad, is because they are wearing heavy armor. Why do you think Rambo looks cool, because he has the muscles to make it look right, if ya know what I mean.

Well first off, I like all the responses, brings multiple perspectives for me to consider. Personally, I am not sayying men have to have short hair, wow I hated having military cuts. I grew it out and it felt right, but eventually it gets long enough were you actually have to maintain it in a special way; which to me is the signal for "too long." I am not complaining about lotr hair, I never really cared, just observed, but I do think lady-like hair is bad for men.

Though using culture as a example is not the best idea, why do you think middle easterners have suicide bombers.. Culture Plus agrarian societies are not the most rational example to go by.

I guess what I mean by long hair is, hair that legitimately touches the shoulders, goes further, has to be kept smooth/extensively maintained. To me, it is the thin line between masculinity and femininity, which exists, I do not believe we should treat the questions at hand as "relative," per se.

    thanks all

wow, just as I was about to check my email, I stumbled on this video on the front. But, I really do not know much this person, it is a good example of both styles. Though, I think it is fair to say that most men would honestly rather have a women with longer hair. It is biology, though I can not say the same that women want men with shorter hair.

    oh and this

That thread might rank high in those "most ridicilous ever", but alt least some posts down it gave me a smile, so its fine

Long hair? To my observations, women dont care much, but for the beard: most hate it.

TATW is fine to follow the presentation of the movies in that "early medieval orientation".

I never had the impression that women did not like beards? Anyways, your probably right, I was just thinking after I typed the latest post, "this is somewhat rediculous," but deep in my subconscious I was wanting to get it answered.
