Default .NET Framework error then APPCRASH (Windows Vista)

    Hi Everyone,

It's been a long, long time since I've played MTW2, but I had the sudden urge to go at it again, particularly with some of the Mods. So in went the DVDs into the drive.

    1. I installed MTW2 vanilla (no Kingdoms, not the Gold version) without any problems. I even played it while waiting for the patches to finish downloading, and it worked fine.

    2. I installed patch 1.2 and thats where the problem started. The progress bar worked its way slowly but steadily towards the right, and the copying of files by the installer for the game itself seemed to go fine. Then a smaller box came out which said "Installing .NET Framework" or somesuch. Then this error popped out:
    [IMG][/IMG]

With this error, I tried to launch the game and found that the MTW2 Launcher looked like this:

And when trying to launch the game itself, this error would pop out:

I then spent a few hours surfing the net as well as the forums trying to find a solution, and I stumbled upon the following webpage:
Install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 on Windows Vista – Fix RegSvcs.exe Fails Error

It contained instructions on how to install .Net Framework 1.1 on Windows Vista (which comes with .Net Framework 2.0 and above, but is not compatible with 1.1). I followed the instructions on the page and successfully installed .Net 1.1 (I could see it in my C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET folder).

This time, when I installed patch 1.2 (after doing a reinstall of MTW2 vanilla first, of course), there was no error. Hooray, I thought, I've solved the problem! I went ahead and installed patch 1.3. But when I tried to fire up the launcher, the SAME problem showed itself, and when I tried to launch the game itself, the SAME APPCRASH error showed itself (refer to above pics)!!!

I've spent over 4 hours on this issue. Can anyone help?

In the Medieal2 icon, change the target from launcher.exe to medieval2.exe. The launcher was a bad idea when the 1.2 patch was released. I don't use it, never will.

While you're at it, go to the Microsoft websie and install the latest directx 9.0c availabe, .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, and Windows Media Player 11.

Then if you have any problems, post your dxdiag. It's something else.

    Hi irishron,

Thanks for your reply. Do you support the MTW2 Technical Help all by yourself? Wow, that's great of you. *salute*

    Regarding your points:
    1. Yes, I have tried launching the game directly from medieval2.exe, the APPCRASH error popped out
    2. I have Directx 11
    3. I have .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 already installed
    4. I have WMP11. To be precise, the version number reads 11.0.6002.18111

FYI, I had previously installed the complete K-Lite Codec Pack.

    My DXDIAG looks like this:

Believe it or not you still need http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en installed. Dx11 does not have all the dx9 drivers and dlls this game requires.

After installing this, see if you get the message, again. If you od, disable your codec package and try it. It could be causing prblems.

I've tried to install DX9. However, the problem seems to have gotten worse. I now get the APPCRASH error when starting up MTW2, vanilla. Previously, I could at least run the game - vanilla. This is rather unfortunate, but I do believe I have spent enough time on trying to find a solution to the problem. I'll be moving on to another game, then.

Cheers, and thanks for your help, irishron.
