    Default Gondor diplomacy

I must say I feel a lot like Boromir when I play Gondor, regarding diplomacy with allies. I'm holding off Harad and Mordor, and saving Rohan's worthless hide, and yet all I get is worsening relationships with the good factions. Some thanks!

Yeah, compared to, I suppose you would call them default allies, like Dwarves and Dale, who fight off Rhun equally each, when playing as Gondor or Rohan, you really have to help out whichever is the AI.

i have the same experience myself. can someone tell us what you need to do to actually improve relations ? is giving lots of money or regions to other kingdoms the only way ?

although in some ways you could say it's gondor's responsibility to fight mordor and sauron. like it or lump it that's gondor's destiny. it was afterall isildur who ignored wise uncle elrond's advice and kept the ring. if the ring had been destroyed mordor and sauron would have ceased to exist. come to think of it, that partly explains why the elves do stay in their woods and rivendell, and leave it to gondor to confront mordor. also, somewhere in the books it says sauron hates the numenoreans more than any other peoples or race.

which difficulty do you play with?
with hard and very hard campaign difficulties relationships keep falling, no matter what you do. you have to increase them constantly.

An interesting subject, diplomacy. Overall I don't think that TATW is any/much different from vanilla M2TW/Kingdoms so any guide on diplomacy would help.

I was going to suggest TATW Stragtegy Guide but I didn't see anything in there on this subject.

Off the top of my head...
    • Don't walk through anyone's land unless you have Military Access
    • Fight the enemies of those you wish to impress
    • Improving relations with a faction will/can? also improve those with their allies
    • Executing prisoners lowers your global standing, releasing them raises it (I think)
    • Offer them gifts - Map Info costs you nothing
    • Tributes - 1000 per turn for 10 turns can work well, if you're really trying to get on someone's good side, if you can afford it

Plus others. Trade relations help, I believe. A search might yield more.

Generally, your relationship with any faction drops over time. It's a matter of making sure that you don't do anything to make it drop faster and occasionally doing things to bump it up. Gifting money and regions work wonders but it will steadily drop back down if you do nothing further.

I find that improving relations is not too difficult. It's getting Military Access that's the real hurdle (or can be).

One thing I found that's good to know: if you're trying to swap a region for, say, an Alliance, and they won't buy it then give them the region as a gift. Then propose an Alliance (in the same session). They're so pleased with you for giving them that region that they'll be more than happy to agree (hopefully). Of course, if they then refuse then you've 'wasted' that region.

EDIT: on closer reading the Strategy Guide does contain some diplomacy pointers - regarding Alliances mostly

EDIT2: a quick google found this: M2TW Diplomacy

I think the execution part has been changed, but ectermitating the population of conquered cities still damages your reputation.

Also something that's easily forgotten: The usage of assasins does damage to your reputation, too.

playing as high elves n eriador i noticed this trend. eventually i got sick of the ungrateful humans and broke the alliance. now high elves rule everything west of the gap of rohan. oh and the cash yield. its beautiful. the best irony was using elronds general unit to kill aragorns.

    hands off mah daughter scum

And yes, the execution part is changed definatly (otherwise i would be in war with everyone, everytime...).
May the earth be light upon you, lest the dogs can dig you out more easy.

Yeah it's just part of the difficulty settings of M2TW. All relationships gradually decrease on harder settings, and even more so if you're the #1 ranked faction (at least that's what I recall, correct me if I'm pulling this out of my behind!). If you're allied it keeps the relationships better, and they really love it if you are killing their enemies.

Still, can't help but think of ol' Boromir when it happens as Gondor and I'm saving all their butts. At least Rohan loves me <sniff>
