Trading. Build streets, markets, harbors, get trade agreements.
keep as small a standing army as possible and build roads, ports, and markets.
Capture rich cities is honestly the fastest and depending who the cities belong to maybe easiest.
Otherwise send diplomats to get trade agreements, build basic markets, then ports, and all the while grow the city population with high chivalry generals. Merchants on ships to Scandinavia or anywhere they can earn more than 100 per turn as level 1 merchant will start bringing in much more money as they level up. Just don't waste the merchants sending them into enemy territory that has higher level merchants.
If you are catholic, call a crusade and get free upkeep for your entire crusading army![]()
Yeah but the point is that you call a crusade, get free upkeep for the army and then take the crusade target (v.easy if you are the Templars) which will then give you extra income
Damn you Byg, ruining all the fun!I know only BGR charges 5,000 per Crusading army but the other affects hold for most mods.![]()
Crusade on Vilnius? That makes more sense than just joining a Crusade which I thought he was recommending.
Yeah, Byg thought of some other little fixes for common abuses besides the Crusade cost as well.
I don't really understand how taking advantage of the zero upkeep cost for crusading armies is an abusive tactic. It's a part of the game if you're a catholic nation. It's a great incentive to play the whole Papalcy game. If crusaders were expensive then that would take away a lot of the fun.

thanks for all the helpful info
Grab Antioch on Turn 1. You should have a spy. Grab all your available troops and if you get lucky, you can attack with the gates open and you immediately have the income of Antioch.
But as has been said, cities are key, and Edessa, Damascus and Jerusalem are all within striking distance, especially if you can tie it in with a crusade. When you have troops to spare, you can try crusading on Cairo or Alexandria, giving you wealthy cities, and cutting down the Fatimids revenue.
Use crusades to your advantage for the free upkeep and movement. You'll have more than plenty targets to choose from unless a whack of Catholics decided to get themselves excomm'd and are at war with the Papacy.
Although not a specific guide, read my Rise of the Temple Knights AAR (see below) for a turn 1-130 walkthrough of one option to play the Templars.
