    Default Question on BI-features

First, I'd like to say that I'm greatly enjoying Extended Realism. No other mod has made me bond with my legions quite as much. Well, actually it's only one legion, since I'm too cheap to field more than one stack due to the increased upkeep. This forces me to use my veterans in every combat theater. The fact that virtually my entire army is at stake in every battle (from Carthage to Gaul) is truly awesome. As to my question: since ER is based on BI, I was wondering if it includes Hording Factions. I was hoping to time the Marius-reforms to the creation of one such horde (the Germans are about to get crushed by their neighbours), since I'd like to RP everything as much as possible. I'm no historian, but I recall the Marius reforms took place because of the need to recruit more troops to counter various rampaging hordes within the Republic. I'm already hoarding cash to finance the operation, but I'm unsure if Hording is even available in ER. Would anyone be so kind as to enlighten me?

    Hi mate,

You're partially right about the Marian Reforms, though I think some historians also claim that all Marius did formalise something that had been happening for a while. Needless to say, I'll let the history buffs of the forum give a better overview of the Marian Reform if they wish.

I've yet to encounter a horde on EXRM, so I can't really answer your question regarding whether or not hordes appear. Again, I'll let the experts comment on that.

Personally, I think Galatia should begin the game as a few horde armies, after all they arrived in Asia Minor after raiding, looting, pillaging and all sorts of schenanigans in Greece. I don't think this will happen in EXRM 4.0 either as I believe they may end up incorporated into the Barbarian Superfaction. Still if they don't then maybe Quinn, Carados and the rest of the team (no idea who the rest are) could possibly start them as a horde.

What, I thought they'd decided to make the Galatians start out as horde a long while ago?

I don't know, they could have. I can't really remember. I think there was a thread which ended up talking about it a while back, but I can't remember what the result was. Hopefully they'll post soon to clarify things. There's a fair chance that I'm being stupid here.

    And you'd be right

Galatia are going to start off as a horde. There were a few people who were of the opinion the Galatians shouldn't be in altogether, but faction slots are tight enough as it is and where is the fun in being the same as everyone else? The ExRM players will have the option of playing a rather entertaining campaign as a proper horde faction.

At the moment though, nope, no hordes in the current ExRM.

    Excellent! This pleases me somewhat

Well, it's not the first time I've looked stupid around here and it sure won't be the last!

We all have our moments Ceasar.

About the BI-features, is there actually any troops which uses the "Can Swim" feature? I've always avoided river warfare, but one day I guess I'll find myself in one, and it would be nice to not drown every single unit. I can imagine hoplites don't swim, but perhaps a peltastai unit can?

off-topic, but if i ever find myself in a river battle, and I've won or have the enemy on the run, i tend to do two things

    1. dramatically have my calvary on my side of the bank and then.. START off they go running the enemy cowards down..

    2. i place any units that ran and returned back into the river to get sucked away i let them idle there and i even get to see one or to die and get carried away LOL!!

although this is rare, as most routed units don't come back to me and i don't have time to have muy general rally yhtme when i have tropps to maintain in high morale to live through the causalities of melee fighting..

I don't know of any that swim, but I can't say I've ever tried it. I rarely play bridge battles (far too easy).

I think the can_swim attribute has been properly systematized, but, if not, it's on the to-do list for the next version.
