GIMP is a plugin for Photoshop.

It's always very hard to help someone, who never did it. The best would be, if you download a mod, to have a base. Then try to change some small things and look in the game on the effect. After a time you will find your style.
Maybe start with this easy thing: Select an area like pants and change the color with http://techbutter.com/wp-content/upl...tion_large.jpg.
I don't have Gimp, so I can't really help you.
