A celebration of an event that was against the democratic process which lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands. Nice!

Don't get me wrong, I think this is stupid. But did any of you actually read the link?

WHEREAS, all Virginians can appreciate the fact that when ultimately overwhelmed by the insurmountable numbers and resources of the Union Army, the surviving, imprisoned and injured Confederate soldiers gave their word and allegiance to the United States of America, and returned to their homes and families to rebuild their communities in peace, following the instruction of General Robert E. Lee of Virginia, who wrote that, “...all should unite in honest efforts to obliterate the effects of war and to restore the blessings of peace."; and
    What's wrong with that exactly?

And Oswald, please stop the "people only hate Obama because he's black" nonsense, it's petty.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with recognizing those who fought and died. I do find a problem with the idea of celebrating the institution of the Confederacy as if it was some noble pursuit that was worth dying for. I really hope this proclamation doesn't extend into public schools.

Uh its not a new concept and it was "celebrated" in Virgina til 2001 when it was dropped due to a Democrat being in governors office, its only now that a republican is in office that it is back. So its not 145 years, its more like 8 and the "month" has been recognized by other states and cities for quite some time, this isnt new, this isnt unique.

They didn't believe in that cause either.

The only reason they fought is because they didn't want to fight their friends and families and believed it was their duty to protect them.
Didnt mean Lee or Longstreet specifically there meant people in the south in general, its far too easy to just dismiss the whole lot INCLUDING Lee and Longstreet as simply being racist, it fits the nice tidy view of some even if it is completely inaccurate. People fought as they fight in wars for various different views, whether to protect the family and friends, whether against what they saw as a government enforcing its will or yes because they wanted to keep their slaves and probably dozens of other reasons. To dismiss the entire Confederacy as being inherently racist is just flawed, ignorant history.

How is it any of those things? The state "celebrated" it until 2002 due to election of democratic governors for the 8 years that would follow who dropped it and now that there is a republican again it has been reinstated again. Provocation? Its restoring something that existed....reading anything more into it is imo paranoia and just a case of wanting it to be what you want it to mean. Again Ill say you can argue whether months celebrating some groups specific history is stupid, Id agree but there is nothing specifically wrong with THIS. And why exactly would the Clinton's care about it that Texas and Louisiana did it according to you specifically aimed at them? You know occasionally there is opposing parties in power when states decide on a course of action....it happens you know, doesnt mean there is some plot behind it.

But they did murder police officers. Some of them might have been corrupt police officers, but murder is still murder.

And southerner? I live in New Jersey. Reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaal far south.

You posted a video of a bunch of random uber conservative whites supporting McCain for the wrong reasons, so I posted a video of Black Panthers supporting Obama (and intimidating voters) for all the wrong reasons.

If police officers beat up members of my race just because they were black or asian or whatever, I would murder them too. An eye for an eye.

How many black panthers are there as compared to the number of dumbass redneck conservatives?

It ain't the same thing. The current Black panthers are an extremist Racist group, analogous to the KKK and Barack Obama doesn't have anything to with them. Whereas, the Video I posted are a lot more mainstream, the Republicans actively pandered to that segment of the America demographic.

How are Black Panthers, basically a Black supremacist group analogous to rednecks?
It depends on what Black Panthers group you're talking about, Black Panthers was highly factionalized. With groups being anti-racist Communists, to violent Black nationalists.

Hell, I know for a fact a variety of ex Black Panther leaders [ were convicted for raping and beating people,
Black Panther's weren't apart of the Civil rights movement, but nice try in your attempt to discredit the civil rights leaders.

and other members of the civil rights movement for that matter]
    Who?

I haven't seen any propaganda or anything resembling where Republicans pandered to Racists. Well, I suppose the whole Muslim thing sorta qualifies. Regardless, the Tea Party movement came about quite a while after that whole row about Obama being a closet Muslim, and they are mostly Libertarians. Opposed to the mainstream Republican party. Hell, most old guard Republicans are facing electoral defeat or competition with tea party supporters, the same movement they endorsed. No, I've seen little evidence that the Tea party movement is grounded in Racism or that its [it being the racist fringe elements] advocated by Republicans. Obviously in any highly political movement your going to get an over representation of radicals though.

    Fair enough.

Civil rights movement went on until the late 60's, Black Panthers were formed in the mid 60's. Yes they were.

No, I'm not at all trying to discredit someone like Martin Luther King. Though yes, there are some out there who are given undue credit while in reality they were just thugs. Look at Malcom X. Pretty fine example for most of the Civil rights movement of the more radical and unrespectable variety. Undoubtedly he caused deaths- indirectly- by the things he said.

Not a founding member as I recall, but definitely a higher up who- numerous times- has been respected and declared a hero in the news. He is just one example of literally hundreds, the civil rights movement was permeated by men like him. Thats just a fact.

    1. Their country doesn't exist so you're celebrating a rebellion in which heaps of Americans were killed.
    2. Have a general civil war memorial then.

It seems a bit silly to devote an entire month to the Confederates despite the significance of the Civil War but I don't see anything taking shots at Obama. It's not promoting dissension or anything just recognition and understanding of a historical period.

Hooray for losers who started a war that consumed more American lives than any war before or since combined?

    Umm... OK.
