City of God

Or, Cidade de Deus. I just watched this and I was blown away. Basically it follows a handful of characters in a slum in Rio de Janeiro, the City of God, from childhood up to adulthood as they get caught up in the drugs and violence.

Thoughts? Has anyone else seen it?

Fantastic movie, really want to see it again.


has anyone watched the series spinoff? It's called Children of God or something like that, I've heard that it's pretty good, though not as dark as Cidade de Deus

I haven't heard of it, but I'll probably check it out now though.

Yeah, I watched it a long time ago when they played it on IFC or some channel.

I thought it was really good.

I'm glad that one kid(photographer) didn't end up being bad. He tried it and couldn't do it. Kept saying they were nice people.

The story of Knockout Ned was pretty sad too, I mean his motives in the beginning were pure but after a year he forgot what he was fighting for.

Yeah that part was funny.

I've heard much about this movie, and everytime some channel showed it on the TV the papers raved on about it, giving it highest marks etc. But I've never given myself the time to see it, which bugs me quite alot

Cidade de Deus pwns slumdog millionaire.

The 'spinoff' was a tv series called "City of Men" (cidade dos homens) that accompanies the lives of two boys in the slums, basically trying to dodge a life of crime. The series ended and they made a movie with the same name http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870090/

Loved City of God. A great movie.

Saw the sequel,didn't care for it.

Yeah, huge fan of the series, "city of men". I think 3 seasons. I have them on DVD. Better than the movies.

If you mean City of Men you should know that it's not a sequel, they are completely separate productions, Meirelles would never make a sequel...

Another good movie is "Tropa de Elite" it's about the special forces squad of Rio de Janeiro, considered one of the best in the world, it's much more action oriented but still very good.
