Default Can't believe I am back here...

Haven't played RTW in god knows how long. I played it for ages back in 2004 and then played for a few hours back in 2007 and now I am back again playing RTW.

I have a few questions though, why does the game still give crappy fps when there is a lot of men on a battlefield? My computer nowdays can run games like Modern Warfare 2 on maximum graphics and Battlefield Bad Company 2 on max graphics at very high resolutions, yet RomeTW will lag with 2000 vs 2000 men on a battlefield.

I notice the FPS is the same no matter if i have the graphics on the lowest or the highest. This has to be something with the game being capped at a certain point or something.

Is there anything around this issue or is it just simply impossible to have gigantic battles in the game due to how the game was coded back all those years ago and no amount of new technology over half a decade in the future cannot fix?

Also, I had lost my CD's and just bought the game on Steam, it also came with the Barbarian Invasion which I had never played in the early days of the game. I was wondering if you're able to continue a massive campaign in the Barbarian Invasion like you could in the original game. I use to love the trade in the game and would play for hundreds and hundreds of years making tens of millions of denarii while almost every other faction had died off.

    Anyway, whats up?

Maybe a processor problem? I think it only uses one core, so my new computer is actually less powerful than my old one because it uses multiple cores. If not, I dunno. Welcome back though!

Actually modern warfare 2 is not the most demanding game as long as you don't have a crap computer. Still, that it's the same lag whether you have high quality or low is wierd. That is not normal so something is wrong with your computer...

My CPU is like 30 degree's celcius when playing the game and my graphics card never goes over 50 degree's while playing it...here are the stats.

    Quadcore @ 3.2Ghz
    6Gig Ram DDR3
    Nvidia GTX 280
    10,000 RPM Harddrive Velciraptor
    850 Watt PSU
    Antec 1200 Case
OS = Vista Ulimate 64 Bit

I am pretty sure the game is capped some how. Unless there is some coding I can work around? If there is more then 3500-4000+ men on the battlefield it will be laggy like 10-15fps. This can't be something with my PC. Every other game I own thats come out last year and this year plays flawlessly on maximum graphics and highest resolutions available to me.

I assumed by now with the technology we have I'd be able to play with 20,000 men on the battlefield with very high FPS yet it seems the game is holding it back some how as I do remember with my old gaming rigs that were much worse then what I have now all those years ago, still would lag with several thousand, it's almost like theres no difference from then to now even though my PC is about seven hundred thousand times better.

ah..... it's using only one of your cores, therefore the CPU is actually giving less "power" to RTW, than, say MW2.

RTW is considered an "old" game as it cannot support multiple cores. that's probably your problem.

    Ah I see

Is there any work-around for this? I've seen a lot of other people on random forums say they get the same issues on their beast gaming rigs, yet some say they don't get any lag even with 10k+ men on the field. I don't think these guys are being honest :/

    Okay something weird fixed this

I was trying to mess around with the FPS issues here

What I did to fix it was

I put a custom battle with 10,000 men.

I turned every single graphic option to the lowest, fps was still the same. So I decided to try the resolution at the lowest possible as well. The FPS went from 15 to 50 from that.

I then put the resolution back to normal and put all the graphics up back to max again, the 50 FPS stayed and it didn't go back to 15.

Some how putting my resolution to the lowest, then putting it back to the highest, fixed the issue. I have no idea how this worked, but yeh whatever Im happy now.
