Which faction are you? If you are muslim or pagan there is no guarantee that you will not be a crusade target...
thats lame
i mean if you cant trust the pope than who can you trust...

I canting believe it . It just happened to me at a moment when everything seemed to turn fine .
Playing as sicily i had taken most of central north africa ,participated in a couple of crusades , had very good relations with the pope while bribing him each turn from the beginning of the game .
When suddenly im attacked by aragon for no apparent reason and one turn later ,the pope goes crusading on my ass?!
I had like the max piety at first and was allied for like 70 turns from the beginning of the game .
I was doing everything proper with that dude .Now i dont feel like playing SS anymore or m2tw at all for that matter .
Any ideas people cause ive run out .

Max piety means 10/10 crosses on the Popometer in the Pope tab? That's not piety, that's corruptability
He called a crusade against you? The only explanation I can think of is that he gave you a ceasefire with Aragon mission with an excommunicate penalty and you failed it, so Aragon requested a Crusade and he said yes.
...ceterum autem censeo Carthaginem esse delendam.
Well, it varied with the Pope... Gregory VII was far less corrupt than John XII, for example, it's difficult to generalise. But you can't trust the Pope if you're not Catholic!

Better yet, once I was excommunicated, and tried to get the pope to launch a crusade on my capital.
He refused.
No ,never harmed christians ever .Just Aragon suddenly attacked me with no reason and the pope followed suit apparently

No. It would be nice to know why on earth aragon attacked me . I cant understand why the pope follows aragon ,his ally .Although Aragon has a higher rep and didnt slaughter every muslim in Africa .
But still 70 turns of tribute and one region as a gift . Think that would have sufficed to keep em quiet .

The Pope is all about what have you done for me lately and I wouldn't recommend gifting him regions unless you took Rome. When he feels stronger he is more likely to backstab. Aragon usually ends up being a Papal darling if it survives due to its fight vs Moors. Even if you and Aragon are tied in Papal favor and Aragon attacks and you win the battle you might lose favor with the Pope and then the Pope chooses Aragon over you.
This is common in SS and even many other mods with a Pope... it is also fairly historical where the Pope distrusted any major powers that held Italy. There is a reason Italy was full of competing city states for a long time to do with Pope playing each side against another and maintaining its power in Italy that way.

The best way not to have Pope turn is not only give tribute but make sure the elected Pope is from your empire. I've still had my own elected Popes turn on me occasionally but much less often. Fill up the college of cardinals and your man almost always selected once you got about 6-7 of your own cardinals.
The Pope sort of takes it as their due to get tribute and if you gave him another region which borders your empire the AI logic looks at you as enemy and will ally with your enemies.
Thats just the problem. I am playing 6.2 RR/RC/BGRIV as England. When I took Cairo on a crusade I was "maxed out on the pope meter". Eight major victories and on the way to a "second statue of my leader" being erected, my Pope meter is down to 7. I always keep one of my diplomats sitting in Rome and just make some PRN donations to the church and the "pope meter tends to stay close to max". I am pretty sure executing non-catholic folk still gives a penalty to the pope meter; seems like the Pope values all creatures be it Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim or Pagan![]()
