How do i turn off auto save?

you'll have to go to your preference folder and open the text file Preferences, in there should be a line that says "AUTOSAVE:TRUE" you need to replace True with FALSE

Using RTW.exe and BI.exe savegames are likely to get corrupted. Not only the autosaves, but all of them, and you will have to dump your whole campaign. Turning off the auto saves helps in preventing corruption, but you will have to remember to save manually.

Yes, but with ALX.exe it happens much more rarely...personally I have never had any corrupted saves with ALX.

I also found that the game crashed more when I had autosaves enabled. It may just be a coincidence, but now I can go 13 hours without a crash.

I just had my computer on for 13 hours. I played for 3-4 hour spans over the day. I ended my binge in a crash during a battle in Asia Minor.

Yeah I had a crash in Asia Minor too recently

I'd set up a beautiful ambush for a rebel stack and it wouldn't let me play it on the battle map D:

Same happened to me! Except I was on the receiving end of the ambush!

It could be a terrain issue, there are a few places on the campaign map where there are issues with the new terrain that cause CTDs. You could try switching to the old terrain for the battle and see if that gets you by the crash or auto-resolve the battle.
