Mods lag on comp.
I can play the normal RTw game fine, unit scale on huge, maybe some tweaks in the other graphical options, but some mods, lag ALOT on may normal RTW settings and I end up have to downgrade (EG on a mod like Roma Surrectum). I not used to this whilst playing normal RTW but I'm just wondering what the difference is.

Unit skins are a big factor. Therirs are a true 32bit and will hit harder graphically than what CA made.

Well does using minimal UI make a difference in speed? Because it if speeds up gameplay on that setting then I'm all for using it.

Re: Mods lag on comp.
As irishron has posted - most mods will be using higher quality skins than the original game.
I don't know if using minimal UI will make any difference - if anything it may slow it down even further as there is more to re-draw.
Post details of your graphics card - also which driver are you using?

Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family
Intel 2 Core Duo 2.00 GHz
Direct X 9.0c
Windows Vista Home Edition
Tell me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm using an integrated graphics card, but it runs many 3D games well. Those are some of my stats, tell me if you need more info...

That 3d chip will run Rome but not as good as you think. I know from eperience. If you want to play 3d games good, get a good dedicated graphics card made for the job.

I don't think I've ever heard of an external graphics card. It's one of the downsides of a laptop in that most cannot have the grapahics capability improved.
