    Default No experience? or Stars!?

I just won, literally 4 heroic victories in a single turn with a single legion. (I found that if you back yourself upto the mountains North of Massilia and East of the Bridge to Gaul, the armies can only attack you one by one.) I owned them because, as mentioned before, I positioned my army on the mountain and was thus granted a huge elevations bonus and allowed the 10 hastati and 6 bowmen to rain arrows/pila on the quivering Gauls. Majority of unit broke before even reaching my lines, so I countercharged with my infantry and cavalry and massacred running Gauls. (combined casualties of the 4 battles did not exceed 150 Romans)

After a legion of around 1000, obliderating over 6000 men (4 1500man Stacks (typical gallic stack, 1 incompetent general and 19 warbands)) in the space of 3 months, they have not gained a single bronze chevron, nor has the General gained a single star (he currently has 3).

    My question is why???

For hastati pila shots do not give you any experience...I do think your cavalry and velites should have gained SOME experience though...did you make sure that you don't have some kind of mod that skrewed up the original files?
The type of units that you use also makes a difference in experience gaining: Eastern Infantry gain experience faster than Principes or superior troops...if each unit of your army kills a little bit of the enemy's soldiers you won't get experience....try to put emphasis on certain units and make them fight the most so you can "level them up" one at a time.
I am not sure about this but I think that sometimes units gain experience AFTER a battle, if their number of kills/losses is greater/less than all the other units of your army....
My general advice is: If you want to give experience to your armies you a) get some temples that do that b) kill ridiculous number of enemies with small armies (this way you get XP guaranteed) c) throw your best units in the hardest tasks and let them achieve supremacy on their own...if they do, they are most likely to win experience(but don't send them on kamikaze missions either.

I have no idea how generals level up...I usually make sure that mine fight a lot and that they fight well

Experience is gained on the battlefield and awarded instantly, having one of your units kill an entire enemy unit by themselves should give them a chevron.

Sounds like bad luck to me. I've had a unit of Cretan archers kill 600 men in a single battle with only a 4 deaths themselves yet they failed to gain any chevrons. You also see units get experience that haven't participated in the battle at all. Sounds like a string of bad luck.

For the general, maybe don't take as many men to battle. You get traits much faster if you win against the odds of the auto-resolve calculator.

Indeed....fighting large armies with puny forces is a sure chance of getting experience for your units and/or general.

Also, killing routing soldiers gives you very little experience. IIRC, it's only like 1/5 of the experience you'd get from fighting and killing same soldiers.

what is the usual ratio? for every 10,000,000 kills you get a chevron?
