    Default A Little Refresher

Hey guys..First off, great mod! The info and screens look a-m-a-z-i-n-g. I'm looking for a new mod to play with after getting bored of that plane crash E:TW. When I usually default back to RS I noticed this mod here and have always wondered what it's about. Could someone let me know what the best version or RTR is? Thanks a ton guys keep up the good work.

There are different versions. For an overview, look at the FAQ:

Personally, I'd recommend our lastest release, FOE. It's a campaign focussed on the western Mediterranian with some great new and challanging concepts that'll grand you hours of gameplay!

You could better have directed him to here: RTR - Downloads and Mod Index
Because that's where all RTR mods are listed with a small description explaining what they do.

Though if you want my opinion... If you want to try an RTR mod with the latest in gameplay innovations and high res grapphics, you should try FoE (and TIC if you like a challenging short campaign)
If you want a campaign with a map from Iberia to Britain to India, then I would advice to try the "stand-alone-sub-mod" for RTR Platinum: ExRM (Extended Realism Mod), which besides the VII series, is the newest there is for RTR.

There are many many differences between RTR and RS - some of which you might like, others maybe less or not. But it are imo too many differences to simply list them. People have said a lot already about FoE above my post, so I'm not going to repeat that ones more. But I would recommend you to read our FoE Manual, which explains some of the new gameplay elements and gives a taste of what else you can expect from FoE, plus some interesting historical background information written by our historian HamilcarBarca

RTR Platinum Edition V1.9 is probably the best. Fate of Empire's is the newest but its only a map of the Western Mediterranean whilst PE stretches all the way to India and Afghanistan. PE was the first RTW mod i played. Spent many, many months happily playing it. It's great fun.

Well there is RTR 6 (which is pretty much just Platinum at this point) which stretches from Iberia to India. This is more like a classical RTW mod. same economy method, same army types, etc. RTR Platinum also hosts the EXRM mods, which adds some new factions and re-does the economy, amongst other changes. Also very fun.

RTR VII is the new series in the RTR mods. They cover smaller lands but in much better detail. These have better graphics, better gameplay mechanisms, cooler scripts, difficult economies, and much more.

Currently there are 2 RTR VII releases. TIC (The Iberian Conflict) and FOE (Fate of Empires). TIC focuses on Hamilcar Barca's expansion of the Carthaginian Republic into Iberia. Very quick, fast faced, and action filled. Its unlike any other campaign I've seen around TWC.

FOE is the latest release and focuses from Iberia to Epirus (which is on the western coast of Greece). The main conflict in the Second Punic War. At the start it portrays the defence of Southern Italy from Rome by the Legendary Phyrros of Epeiros, and Carthages attempts to occupy Sicily. FOE is a larger campaign then TIC with a great deal of fine mechanisms that fine tune RTR into one of the best mods around.

RTR VII: FOE and the RTR team that worked on FOE won a total of 5 awards in the recent awards competetion, so needless to say, people like it .

If you want a tried forumula that is old, tested, and works, I would recommend RTR Platinum 1.9, and then install Exrm for extended realism and more fun. I love this mod
If you want a faster paced, newer concept that most people love, try RTR VII: FOE and RTR: TIC (be warned, TIC is very short ).

Or you can download both (best idea)

To get you ontop of things i can tell you about the coming releases.

RTR VII is in developement. This will extend the Map into Gaul, Parts of Scythia, the Balkans, All of Greece, and the tip of Asia minor. Its going to be the best of the RTR VII series and most likely the conclusion to this ground breaking series.

Fortuna Orbis, a RTR Platinum 1.9/Exrm based mod. Its being made by Caligula Caesar and extends all the way to India from Iberia. This looks to be very fun.

Exrm 4 is also in developement. Taking Exrm to new levels, most RTR lovers and anxiously awaiting this mod, and it does look amazing

The thing about Platinum is that, tbh, there are just as good other mods out there (RS and EB spring to mind). It isn't really unique anymore. The units are a bit out-dated (there are a few still in the VII Beta (they will all disappear, don't worry ), and they are very noticable. Coupled with that, the map is grossly inaccurate, escpecially in the East, and the eastern AoR is pretty shambolic. There are quite a few bugs and CTDs, and the balancing is a bit off, so after a prolonged campaign you will have to face stack after stack of Seleucid, Macedonian and/or Ptolemaic hordes. Hence why there are so many sub-mods

However, FOE fixes all that. The units are great, the map is awesome, and there aren't any real weak points, except for the lack of factions. That is because it is only centred in the western Mediterannean, and so only has 6 playable factions. The gameplay for each of these is amazing, though, and the lack of factions will be fixed in VII. Despite the smaller scope, campaigns can still last for quite a long time before victory is certain, probably longer than in Platinum (though I didn't have to use add_money cheats as with Bactria in EB )

What sets it above other mods (imo) is the more detailed scope of it. The map is in fact over half as large as the Platinum map, but stretches for about about a quarter of the distance... or something like that. The miniregions allow you to better simulate real-life campaigns, such as the First Punic War. The faction roosters are well filled-out for every faction with top-class units (that was the one thing that bugged me about RS 1.5/6 - the units are great, but only Rome has a proper rooster...), as are the AoRs.

The economy also allows more depth and better balance to the campaign. You shouldn't end up with ridiculous amounts of money on this mod.

Of course, I don't mean any offense to other mods. RS II will be pretty amazing, and I will definitely play it. I also play EB from time to time, and some of my inspiration for my mod comes from them. EB II will be great, if previous releases are anything to go by...
