Icon2 Diverse Artillery Mod (DAM) for NTW. 26/4-2010 Major update to version 1.6 including all custom unit cards/images and other features.

The Diverse Artillery Mod version 1.6 is now released 26/4-2010.

This mod adds diverse Artillery units with varied properties and changes existing units to give a more (IMO) realistic representation of Napoleonic era Artillery and also to diversify the different faction roosters. The mod is meant to be played on top a vanilla installation or along compatible mods. Therefore I try to construct it in a modular manner so it doesn’t overwrite unnecessary tables/files. That allows it to be easily included in mod compilations like the “Napoleon all in one mod” by ToonTotalWar.

This mod now includes the Realistic Explosion Effects by WILLIEHUNTZ so the credit for that part of the mod goes to him. If you like his work you can show your appreciation and would like to see screenshots of the effects then take this path: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=345170

This mod also includes Projectile Trails that are less visible than Vanilla NTW and is the work of Dogmeat and is identical to the trails in his Tyrant Mod. Again if you like his work you can show your appreciation by taking this path: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=337787

What this mod gives you besides the above mentioned third party contents:

    • 83 different new Artillery units spread among all major and minor factions.
    • Many factions now have access to both Foot Howitzers and Horse Howitzers.
    • Most Minors and Emergent Factions now have access to artillery through “Barracks” building line.
    • Several “Elite” Artillery units added to both France and Britain.
    • Complete rework of projectiles behaviour based on projectile size or weight and country of use. This is accomplished by introducing a lot of new cannon projectiles and gun types.
    • Unit stats and Unit properties varies between factions.
    • Customized Unit Info cards and Info image included for Missing units and Horse Howitzers.
    • Artillery engagement angle is changed from a Circle (360 degrees) to Sector of Circle with 75 degrees left and right from default facing (150 degrees total) to prevent friendly fire casualties. Thanks to BruceR for the inspiration.
    • Reworked recruitment access with earlier availability of 12-lbers and Howitzers etc.
    • Infantry "file" penetration better and you should see 1 casualty per rank at most round shot hits.
    • Accuracy boost replaced by Rate of Fire boost.

Works for both European Campaign, Coalition Campaign, Quick Battle and probably also for Multiplayer and other Campaigns.

Before release the build goes through a simple engineering test and files are under configuration control.

    Changelog:

    Version 1.0

    1. Ranges for projectiles increased to more realistic values including Canister (12pdr=900/400). The bigger the barrel, the bigger propellant it has and thereby longer range. See http://napoleonistyka.atspace.com/artillery_tactics.htm for further information.
    2. Velocity lowered to give more bouncing shots. Might be lowered to much, therefore feedback appreciated.
    3. Number of Canister pellets adjusted to increment with munition size.
    4. Damage model differentiated for Howitzers taking munition size into account.
    5. Base reload time adjusted with 12pdr=60seconds as baseline. 6pdr. is thus 30seconds. Also See http://napoleonistyka.atspace.com/artillery_tactics.htm for further information.

    Version 1.1: Test version only.

    Version 1.2

    1. Implemented 4-lber projectile.
    2. Added 5 new units to French rooster:

    • 4-lber Foot Art.
    • Artillerie à Cheval de la Garde Imperiale, Young Guard (4-lber Horse Art.)
    • Artillerie à Cheval de la Garde Imperiale, Old Guard (8-lber Horse Art.)
    • Artillerie à Pied de la Garde Imperiale, Young Guard (4-lber Foot Art.)
    • Artillerie à Pied de la Garde Imperiale, Old Guard (12-lber Foot Art.) All with unique properties/values.
Canister range decreased to 300meters due to gameplay issues.
Other minor adjustments to Projectile table.

    Version 1.3 and 1.3.1

    1. Implemented 3-lber cannon projectile.
    2. Implemented 5.5” howitzer projectile.
    3. Implemented 10-lber howitzer projectile.
    4. Adjustments to projectile table.
    5. Added 16 new units:

    • 5.5-In Howitzer Foot Artillery, France
    • 5.5-In Howitzer Horse Artillery, France
    • 10-lber Unicorn Horse Artillery, Russia
    • 10-lber Howitzer Foot Artillery, Austria
    • 10-lber Howitzer Foot Artillery, Prussia
    • 7-lber Howitzer Horse Artillery, Austria
    • 7-lber Howitzer Horse Artillery, Prussia
    • 6-lber Horse Artillery, Austria
    • 3-lber Foot Artillery, Austria
    • 3-lber Foot Artillery, Prussia
    • 12-lber Foot Artillery, Britain
    • 9-lber Horse Artillery, King's German Legion, Britain
    • 5.5-In Howitzer Foot Artillery, King's German Legion, Britain
    • 5.5-In Howitzer Horse Artillery, King's German Legion, Britain
    • 9-lber Hanoverian Foot Artillery, Britain
    • 6-lber Foot Artillery, King's German Legion, Britain
    • All with unique properties/values.

Version 1.3.1 added. Based on 1.3 with Artillery missile half chance hit increased to 325 meters in "kv_rules" table giving a better accuracy at longer ranges.

    Version 1.4
    Projectile table reworked:

Round shot damage (Kinetic energy) now linked linear to projectile “mass” based on the formular for kinetic energy, under the assumption that projectile speed does influence the kinetic energy of a projectile in NTW game engine:

Projectile mass now correlated with cannon/howitzer bore diameter using this formula (rearange to isolate "r") to calculate the radius of a sphere (and ultimately calibre). The density of a cast-iron cannonball is approximated to 7.6g/cm3:

Using the formula gives the following values (rounded):

    mass in Lb........diameter in Inches
    3-lber............. 2,8
    4-lber............. 3,0
    6-lber............. 3,5
    8-lber............. 3,8
    9-lber............. 3,9
    10-lber........... 4,1
    12lber............ 4,4
    18-lber........... 5,0
    20-lber........... 5,2
    24-lber........... 5,5
    30-lber........... 6

So a 5 inch howitzer actually fires a projectile with the size of an 18-lber cannonball and a 6 inch with the same size as a 30-lber cannonball. I don’t think that is modelled correctly in Vanilla NTW and possibly also in other mods.

I have used these values to increase the lethality of explosive shells and explosion “size”. So prepare for more lethal howitzers.

    Further projectile changes:

    • missile_distance_for_half_chance_hit_artillery lowered to 290
    • Reload times for every projectile changed based on weight and projectile complexity. Setting the fuse on an explosive shell requires some time by the loader.
    • Number of pellets adjusted to source information values and due to howitzer barrel length their canister shots contain 33% less pellets (source information).
    • Pellets are modelled as musket balls (distinction between small and large lead balls not possible in current table) and will inflict similar damage.
    • Howitzer canister shot changed to low trajectory.
    • Projectile ranges changed to source information values. Minimum explosive shot distance increased to 180meters.
    • Projectile velocity values overhauled.
    • Carcass and limestone damage differentiated. Limestone now more lethal.

    New projectiles:

    • 1-lber round shot.
    • 20-lber Howitzer
    • 14-lber Cannon
    • 20-lber Cannon

    New units:

    • 1-pundige Amusetter, Danske Artilleri Brigade (quick firing 1-pounder cannon with a listed double reloading speed as a musket). Denmark
    • 3-pundige kanoner, Danske Artilleri Brigade. 3-lber Denmark
    • 6-pundige kanoner, Holstenske Artilleri Brigade. 6-lber Denmark
    • 12-pundige kanoner, Norske Artilleri Brigade. 12-lber Denmark
    • 10-pundige Haubitsere. 10-lber How. Denmark
    • 20-pundige Haubitsere. 20-lber How. Denmark
    • 3-pundige kanoner, Göta artilleriregemente. 3-lber Sweden
    • 6-pundige kanoner, Svea artilleriregemente. 6-lber Sweden
    • 12-pundige kanoner, Vendes artilleriregemente. 12-lber Sweden
    • 5 tums Fälthaubits. 5” How. Sweden
    • 3-lber Foot Artillery. Added Portugal
    • 5-In Howitzer Foot Artillery. Added Portugal
    • 5.5-In Howitzer Foot Artillery. Added Portugal, Netherlands and U-Netherlands.
    • Experimental Howitzer. Added Portugal, Spain, Netherlands and U-Netherlands. (Portugal and Spain will need better Howitzer Info cards in the future)
    • 4-lber Foot Artillery. Added Spain,
    • 8-lber Foot Artillery. Added Spain
    • 6-In Howitzer Foot Artillery. Added Spain
    • 6-lber. Added Spain
    • 3-okka Foot Artillery. Ottomans 4-lber
    • 5-okka Foot Artillery. Ottomans 6-lber
    • 9-okka Foot Artillery. Ottomans 12-lber
    • 11-okka Foot Artillery. Ottomans 14-lber
    • 16-okka Foot Artillery. Ottomans 20-lber

    Version 1.5
Since last release further investigation has shown that a Howitzer pdr. designation is based on the weight of a stone projectile and not a cast iron projectile. Furthermore a pound did not weigh equally throughout Europe in the early 19th century.
As shown in the screenshot an imperial pound weighed a little more than 1.5 pound in Milan and appr. 0.9 pound in Denmark. To reflect this in NTW this whole mod has been restructured and changed in the following way:

    Projectiles:
The following projectile classes now apply:

    • Imperial/Generic pound used as baseline. Used by Britain, Scotland, Ireland, German minors (except southern most) and Courland etc.
    • “Italian” as 0.65 Imp.pound. Used by Italian peninsula states.
    • “Prussian” (Leipzig weight) as 0.85 Imp.pound. Used by Prussia, Saxony and Poland.
    • “ Russian” as 0.9 Imp.pound. Used by Russia, Romania and Crimea.
    • “Spanish” pound as 0.9 Imp.pound. Used by Spain and Catalonia.
    • Swedish pound as 0.93 Imp.pound. Used by Sweden.
    • Portuguese pound as 0.95 Imp.pound. used by Portugal
    • French pound as 1.1 Imp.pound. Used by France, Bavaria, Wurttemberg, Brittany, Netherlands, Belgium.
    • Danish pound as 1.12 Imp.pound. Used by Denmark and Norway.
    • Austrian pound as 1.2 Imp.pound. Used by Austria, Hungary, Greece.

As an example: an Italian 8-lber weighs less than a British 6-lber.

Therefore based on the above listed values all cannon projectile are differentiated based on weight and country of use with the following values different among countries:
    · Damage
    · Range
    · Velocity
    · Reload time
    · Canister “size”
    · Unit cost and upkeep in game.

    Unit changes:
British 4.4” Howitzer added and following Howitzers are now available in NTW (listed by increasing size):

    • 4.4” How.
    • 10-lber Unicorn (4.8”)
    • 5” How.
    • 5.5” How. Foot+Horse.
    • 7-lber How. Foot+Horse. (5.7”)
    • 6” How.
    • 10-lber How. (6”)
    • 20-lber Unicorn. (6.1”)
    • 20-lber How. (~8”)
    • Exp. How.

All are capped along with elite artillery units. Reload time and damage model of Howitzers is based on projectile size.

All units are now differentiated (between country classes) regarding:

    • Cost
    • Upkeep
    • Reload training
    • Accuracy

Accuracy boost removed and replaced by Rate of Fire boost as I can’t see how a crew can increase accuracy without sacrificing rate of fire???

All minors now have access to both cannons and howitzers and I have paid special attention to the following factions: Bavaria, Hannover, Hessen, Italian Kingdom, Poland and a few others.

The decision to split countries into classes has made it necessary to inhibit most generic vanilla cannons and replace them with custom DAM cannons (behaviour and not appearance). It is therefore too difficult to maintain a DAM pack, which is compatible with the venerable Brigadiers Grand Battery mod I’m afraid and has therefore been discontinued with 1.5 release onwards.

    Version 1.5.1
On request by Flanker S (thanks for that sir) I have looked at the reload times and they were too long as reported. Therefore this release includes IMO realistic reload times with approximately 30 seconds for 4-lber, 40 seconds for 6-lber, 50 seconds for 8-lber and 60 seconds for 12-lber. Canister shots 3 seconds longer to reload and Explosive shells a little longer as the loader needs time to set the fuse (based on range) and ignite it (if not ignited by the propellant).

This release also includes the first of the projected unit card and info image corrections needed to various factions. 5.5” French Horse howitzer unit card and info image added. See attached JPG.
Thanks to Klesh for an indirect reminder with his Howitzer á Cheval mod.

    Version 1.5.2
    Version 1.5.2

    1. Realistic Explosion Effects by WILLIEHUNTZ included so no longer need for both mods.
    2. Less visible projectile Trails by Dogmeat included.
    3. Artillery engagement angle is changed from a Circle (360 degrees) to Sector of Circle with 75 degrees left and right from default facing (150 degrees total) to prevent friendly fire casualties. Thanks to BruceR for the inspiration.
    4. Custom unit card and Info Image included for Russian 10-lber Unicorn Horse Artillery.
    5. Custom unit card and Info Image included for Prussian 7-lber Howitzer Horse Artillery.

No new units added so please use the current UPC+DAM1.5 pack file or download the latest UPC here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=338582

    Version 1.5.3 and 1.5.4

All factions now have earlier access to 12-lbers and Howitzers.

France and Britain recruitment access changed so a maximum of 10 different artillery pieces can be recruited at any time in a city.
Only Britain has access to rockets now for the sake of realism.
File penetration of round shots increased so you should preferably see all ranks taking casualties now after each round shot hit.
Uniforms for some DAM custom units changed to Horse Artillery uniforms.
1.5.4 fixes missing muzzle flashes and they are back. Thanks to ToonTW for an indirect help on that.

Current Version 1.6 Remaining missing unit cards and info images added. Few swaps in unit card/image info for previous DAM units.
Most minors and emergent Factions now have access to artillery through “Barracks” building line.
I have intentionally maintained the Vanilla appearance of the unit cards and info images.
Name changes to French Guard artillery units.
All 1-lber to 4-lber’s can now hide in Light Scrub.
Elite units are shock resistant, have good stamina and inspire allies.
French artillery guard units are cold and heat resistant, immune to attrition and “Old Guard” scares enemies.
Danish (incl. Norwegian) and Swedish DAM units are cold resistant.

Until next UPC release use attached UPC+DAM file for proper text.

What's next: Change of unit cards etc.

The mod is mod packed and I noticed a wish in this forum for 8 cannons per unit on ultra settings so the 8 cannon/howitzer version will be maintained (NTW_DAMx.y.z_8).

I have intentionally not down scaled the number of Howitzers in a unit to 1 or 2 as it would probably not be worth wasting an army/stack slot on. Instead I have capped the units in the range from 1 to 8.

To play use the attached script file (Alter it if playing with 8 cannon file) and place the .pack file in "Data" folder. Attached UPC+DAM… file shall also be placed in the Data folder for proper text in game. Remember to have only 1 .loc file in the folder.

The two versions of the mod can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/4kt5..._NTW_Mod_Files

Alternatively download Swiss H’s latest UPC file here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=338582

Enjoy and have a great week.

This looks good. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

UPDATE: Gave the mod a spin in a quick battle and really like the results. I tried a full range of artillery pieces, and the differences were quite apparent. And, so far, the lower velocity seems to work well. I got more kills than usual. I'll keep trying it.

Yes it is compatible with his mod, there are no conflicts. I tried it myself with his ver2. and also with NER mod loaded.

However you can experience different reloading times because Brig. also modded the different reloading skills of the units.

    Hope this answers your question

After some more testing, I continue to like this mod. I think you've done a nice job of differentiating the various types without unduly overpowering artillery overall.

One exception: I think the ranges are too long given the size of the battlefields in NTW. They may be historical, but they are too much for the narrow confines of these battlefields. I'm able to cannister the enemy with 6-pounders from the set up line.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying this mod.

I like the idea of this mod, but will it clash with Brig Grahams artillery mod?? as I am keen to add the French cannons to my all in one mod? thanks

EDIT: I seen answer to question above

For the range, I play with Baron von Beer deployment mod, so longer range makes sense.

It will interfere with his projectiles table but other than that they should be compatible. One solution could be adding the 4-lber projectile to his mod, otherwise just close your eyes and let it overwrite

Would like to see the new cannons in your "All in one Mod".

Excellent stuff mate, will get the new units into "all in one mod" also i have attached an amended projectiles_tables to allow your mod to work with Brigadier Grahams Artillery mod? its just in case that any members may want to use both together as all i have done is deleted your entries that conflict with Brig Grahams

I hope you find it useful mate

    Hi Toon

Thanks mate. I guess you are right, I will make a Brig compatible version as well to give people the opportunity to choose.

    Cheers
