    Default Research and referencing

There are some ,very talented and enthusiastic people on these Forums and its always a pleasure to talk and debate with all of you .What I propose ,on this and maybe more forums is a ,referencing system and library of knowledge ,for us all .What good is a debate if we can't check each others information .We all know there are huge differences of opinion in history and that if I'm not mistaken draws us all to it ,science is linear ,history is just fascinating .So what we need is all you amateur and otherwise historians and just enthusiasts to get on board .What do you say ???/...Its just a thought ,don't want to offend or step on any ones toes !!

I don't mind imposing more rules in this sub-forums at the least, if it improves the overall quality of the forum. Asking people to back up their claims and warning people who refuse to back up their claims will be beneficial in my opinion.

It sounds great to me too. I don't mind if people want to express their opinions and views but it must be based upon some form of evidence and be constructive and add to the argument or add to the overall knowledge base.

Whilst we all at times are prone to 'throw away' comments and making statements without actually giving chapter and verse evidence or references to back up those statements, I do agree that where possible if someone makes a bald statement of fact then they should present the evidence to back up that fact or face the consequences.

It's a good idea, though I can't stop thinking it'd be funny if someone shows up claiming to be a cool guy and then he's requested to quote his sources .

Come to think of it, this will make this part of the forum more historical than VV. When people are forced to back up their claims, they will be less prone to say stuff they don't fully understand. Although I have to ask, if people insist on spamming stuff they is not backed up by any sources, will we ban them from this forum?

I don't mind if people make statements that they don't understand as this is how we learn. This forum is not to show off our credentials but rather how we can help each other in learning more about this period. And I mean from the mid 3rd Century onwards. So, we are hear to help, not hinder.

I agree with JH. We can hope that people won't venture to make wild statements with no evidence or documented support at all and that they will try to prove whatever they say, but if they don't maybe we can just keep moving. Just my opinion.

I would say its important for us all to share knowledge and enjoy the debates ,as for what happens if someone insists on making wild statements ,a few little reminders then just ignore it and move on .I personally think people will get allot more out of it if they do search for evidence to back up their arguments .I also think most people will follow the rules ,if gently reminded from time to time

I agree, referencing should be enforced, and experienced posters using refrences should set an example, and it will encourage others to refrence in a domino effect

There should be some corporal punishment for posting without quoting a fancy book. I'm not saying they should be shot or anything, but definitely hurt in some way. He who breaks the law goes back to the House of Pain!

You mean like all the quotes about solid (non-composite) iron breastplates in classical times? Not only from the amateurs on this site, but pervading much war gamer literature from the past generation?

I suspect the bunch here take themselves way too seriously.

what if your source is a collection of poetry in a non-latin script that only 5% of the world's population can read or comprehend?

beyond that, I love the house of pain!
I haz a culler!! (really, who gives a darn? its totally meaningless, and it doesn't really accurately reflect who I am)

What language might that be, if I may ask?
