If memory serves, you get points in the explorers guild by having ships a long way from your capital. There are probably other triggers but that's the one that springs to mind.

Explorer guild is the fastest guild who come in my games. It allow your generals to move faster and more tiles. Merchant guild mean money, better trademans and is one if the best guilds ever. In fact any guild add you some nice thing, so never refuse it and never demolish.

If this is an accurate reference tool (and I've never had any problems with it before) keeping fleets over 50 tiles away from your capital city is a big help if you want to get the explorer's guild, same goes for building port buildings and ships.

Dependings on the faction, IMO, for which one is better. If I'm playing Italians, Fatimids Norwegians, Danes or Byzantines I'm going to want a Merchant's guild way more since not only does it boost your merchants, but the aforementioned trade bonus (and the big consequences for port settlements too). Whereas if I'm using the Cumans, Hungarians, Kiev, Khwarezmians or Novgorod, the explorer's guild and the additional MP is going to be a whole lot more desireable.

You can improve your chances of getting an Explorers Guild by:

    Building: ports / merchant docks

Having a fleet more than 50 tiles but less than 150 tiles away from the Capitol gives 1 point per turn while more than 150 gives 3 points per turn.

That's it, all military ports and merchant ports increases the ammount of points you have. For those who don't know: 1st tier takes hundred points, 2d 250 points and headquarters 500.
