Default AMD 6 core CPU to sell for $300?

    Source

That would be astounding if it turned out to be true considering intel's 6 core CPU's asking price of well over $1,000.

AMD stole the top spot from Nvidia for best GPU's for the money last year, will AMD also beat intel in the CPU market this year?

Actually, They're asking $199 USD for the lower end one.

    1090T Black Edition: 125(W), AM3 Socket, 9MB Cache, 3.2 GHz Freq @ 295 USD
    1055T: 125(W), AM3 Socket, 9MB Cache, 2.8 GHz Freq @ 199 USD

The only thing different between the two is the Frequency which would be easy to overclock 400mhz lol

It's an unconfirmed rumor, you can't state it as if it were fact.

I was well aware of the $199 rumor... that just doesn't even seem possible.

AMD has stated that most of the rumours surrounding them are generally true, so its very possible that those prices are right.

No reason why it wouldn't. It still uses the Phenom II AM3 socket. Though it wouldn't take full advantage of the features available to the processor (HyperTransport 3, for example).

There's no way that AMD's hex core will beat Intel's in pure perfomance, it will probably get mauled by the i7 980x. In terms of perfomance, it will probably land somewhere inbetween the 920 and the 975 Extreme. But if the Phenom II x6's are aiming at the $300 USD price point, then they'd hit Intel squarely in the nuts. The i7 920/930 go for the $300 USD mark, and the 950/960, etc all go for much more. You may be able to literally shave off $150 in cost, buying a Hex Core, instead of a Quad Core, with performance that will match the higher priced CPU's.

Unless you really like Intel, it's hard to make a case against buying AMD's products instead. Of course, that's assuming that the performance lines up with what I'm expecting. Until the reviews come out, it's just my guess. But still, AMD Hex Core for 1/3rd the cost of Intel's Hex Core? That screams good value. Great for entry level.

AMD really have gotten to work on the whole "bang for buck" concept. Good on them.

Then again, I'm sitting here with my Phenom II x4 555, so I may be biased on the issue.

I'm going to be holding out for one these, at $300 that's puts in the same price bracket as Core i7 920, 930 and 860 if it's performance is up to scratch and it's good overclocker I will be getting one.

Considering how AMD has smoked Nvidia in graphics cards lately, pricewise and performancewise, I wouldn't be surprised if they release their 6 core cpu for $300.

Even if it were $300 I'd rather go with an AMD quad, games don't utilize a quad so why go with a hex?

Because other things do use hex, and with two extra cores that means that much more processing power is available to stuff other than the game. This means that 2 or 4 cores could be utilized solely for the game, with 2 for other stuff in the background.

How many games actually use 4 cores? Games that could actually use four (ETW NTW) don't.

You're missing the point. Think of a processor as a 6 lane highway. If you have a wide load truck(game), it takes up 2 of the lanes(cores). All the other cars (background apps, OS) that would otherwise have to travel down the other two lanes if it was a 4 lane highway can travel down 4 now, decreasing congestion.

From experience with an i7 I don't believe a word of that

The other two cores bumble along at 2-5% use. 2 more lanes wouldn't be useful.

Well, seeing as they are only now optimising games for use with Quad Core machines, I think it'll take a couple of years before games will be made that would utilise the extra 2 cores in any meaningful way. By then, Octo Cores will be out.

In terms of gaming, the main benefit I see would be for multi GPU setups (Tri or Quad SLI/Crossfire). The scaling and performance would most likely improve since there would be a reduction in CPU bottlneck.

Well from the directX11 white paper any game that uses this API should find sub-routines spread over multiple cores how this is working out in practice I don't really know but it's meant to make multi-threading games a lot easier. As far as I know all these game will use 4 cores to some extent -

    - Supreme Commander
    - SC: Forged Alliance
    - Supreme Commander 2
    - GTA IV
    - Bioshock
    - Bioshock 2
    - Unreal Tournament 3 as well as any UT3 based game of which there are quite a few.

With Dx11 now being supported by both major video card companies I would expect multi-threaded games to become more prevalent assuming of course DX11 does what it says on the tin and makes it easier for programmers to design multi-threaded games.

Just because they can "use" four cores doesn't mean they can actually use them to an extent that 6 cores are useful.

Since 6 core CPU's have only just arrived for the consumer you can only expect developers to design games to existing hardware, it was 3 years ago when the Q6600 was first released and it's taken that time for games to finally start using those extra resources so I would expect a slightly shorter time frame for games to come out that can use 6.

This would be very nice. Although I would most likely never use AMD as my CPU but if they did this, I would be considering it
