You can have infantry bodyguards (Silvan Elves, Dale, Dwarves, Orcs), but you can't decide in battle if you want to dismount them or not.

and yet another reason why the original MTW is better!

in there you could right click before battle to dismount knights, giving you knights.

at least MTW portrayed it properly, because you couldnt just recruit foot knights, instead you got the men at arms, but you could recruit heavy cavalry, and then dismount them. the problem was that they were few in number, and AFAIK, they couldnt mount back up

Hello and welcome to the 'build your own heros today'-fanblock!

Sadly it's not just like 'push this button and they'll mount/dismount' like in med1, you have to work yourself into stuff, but it's something that can be done even for no-modders, I think.
I myself once made the attempt of trying to mount the sindar archers, but didn't come further than have them hover one meter above their fast ponies - just a short try. Afterwards I thought there'll be the problem to find a skeleton that holds a two handed melee weapon and rides a horse. Anyways.
If you achieve something, please tell, I'd be interested.
    Good luck!

Uh, this ability of dismounting and mount bodyguards should exist. It should improve gameplay much

Even a very complicated script can't make this work.

If only it would be possible to remove units by scripting and someone could fix the unknown name problem it all could be done.

Does "unknown name problem" refer to the fact, that you can't predict the name of the general leading the army, but need it for the script?

Not before battle. But I suppose you could have a script trigger when a named character goes into a settlement if you want them to dismount or not. However, that would mean losing all experience gained, etc.

Okay, I may get it: if character in settlement -> remove from map (don't remember the exact command now) -> spawn army: same character (in the way he started) with mounted/dismounted bodyguard
If it was something like this - could you do it several times with one character? (Like: mount - dismount - mount again?)
Plus wouldn't you need a very long script including all names possible for all factions in all settlements?
    Greetings.

P.S.: Just trying to learn a little about scripting...

Just make an alternate export_descr_unit with dismounted bodyguards and switch files when you want them to dismount.

It won't work just before a battle, I think. Because the bodyguard your generals have is a part of the save game, not of the game files anymore. Newly born (coming of age, actually) will be dismounted, but not the 'old' characters.

And all traits gained, ancillaries, number of men.

Won't work, you'll need a name to remove characters from the map. And the massive amount of scrips required would slow down AI turns.
