Give me your list of the most underrated musicians of the last century. The musicians who did not get the acclaim they deserved, or even better, the musicians who didn't care about getting the acclaim they deserved but just making music.

My obvious vote would be Rory Gallagher, the more I listen to him the more I realise how underrated he actually was.

Another vote of mine would be George Harrison and Johnny Greenwood.

    Willie Dixon

    Jeff Beck

Most opera musicians. Except Pavarotti. His voice annoys the hell out of me.
In pop... Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Robert Fripp and many other prog musicians. Bob Dylan isn't as popular as he ought to be, but I suppose critics rate him highly enough.
I could write much more for overrated musicians (I would enumerate 95% of pop performers, basically).

Analysis should not be diverted by reflections upon the zeal with which the victors at the end of the Second World War punished the defeated for war crimes. The victors were animated by the ideals of the Atlantic Charter and of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was about to peep over the eastern horizon. But first, they wanted a little hanging.

Let it go man. All that'll happen is that eventually he'll tell you who he thinks is good and you'll have a good laugh and forget about it. Premptive laughter is the only way. It's nice to have opinions. And some people think it's nice to tell you that yours are wrong, especially with music. Let it go.

Have you heard Dylan's 2006 album, Modern Times? Excellent album.

Oh please, you cant honestly say that Bob Dylan is anywhere NEAR the realm of underratedness. He is one of the biggest musical talents of the past 50 years, which ironically has nothing to do with his musical talent.

I'm not saying that he's extremely overrated, but there is no denying that he gets so much hype, a lot of which is undeserved. On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is extremely underrated and 10 is extremely overrated, he's about a 7 or 8. I respect the man for being one of the greatest lyricists ever, but geez, how bout people stop sucking the guy's cock and realise that he's not all that great.

If you want to talk underrated folk musicians, let's talk Leonard Cohen.

I saw bob dylan in concert. It was an amazing experience. I don't think he's overrated at all. Mind you he's so friggin prolific that he's got a huge range, some of it rather mediocre, some of it rather amazing. Undoubtedly he's had a huge impact on music as we know it.

    Leonard Cohen is definitely underrated.

"Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result. Eloquence may set fire to reason." -Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
