No, they're not worth it. You get a few new units and a pretty crappy fantasy native american campaign.

I'd say Dathmod is very popular. He's got his own installer for it too. I'm too lazy to look myself but you can find it in the hosted mods section of the Empire forums.

Yes

No, none at all. CA has announced they will no longer be "majorly" patching Empire anymore, since they need to work on the final product of this fine BETA they sold to us called "Napoleon: Total War". You can no longer honestly expect any new patches of any real worth to be released again.

2) Darthmod is amazing, i've spent well over 100 hours playing DMUC. I have been pondering a go at APE:TI as well, but cannot speak from experience about it.

3) with steam, yes.

4) news? no. unless you want to count NTW as an epically overpriced beta expansion dlc pack for Empire. there is a rumored patch for E, v1.6 but there's a whole thread dedicated to when it'll actually come out so any one's guess.
