    and from game perspective - tighter unit means unit frontage is shorter, therefore AI maneuvers with it BETTER. longer is the unit, more collisions it has, more stucked unit you will see.. whole reforming problem AI has on some map is caused by too long line vs size of map - frontage is just too big for that map, so AI reforms and reforms but never finds enough space... reduced unit spacing makes this less probable...

    and last, if unit spacing is more open, more men in rear ranks will fire - so instead of 2-rank fire, you will end up with 4-6 or even 12 ranks firing (when in column)...
    With 0.65 they are so tight that some units get pushed to the back, effectively making your lines sometimes look more like a mob.

    that is caused by vanilla spacing in battle entities... (its the column after elipse/circle column) just reduce it to 0.3 - 0.1 and they will have more space (soldiers will overlap a little) - that value describes how much free space soldier need. Ellipse/circle at the other side defines soldiers footprint - elipse is better than circle as it blocks LOS better - with circle you will see more men firing from rear ranks.

    oh, and last thing that helps to eliminate rear ranks fire is to reduce line of sight - values 60-70 works good, but once you give unit more degrees, they will be able to fire from rear ranks more...

    Yes, but the 'two rank fire' is in essence a 'trick,' not a real feature. So while the tighter spacing may not 'look' that good, it is a necessity for two rank fire.

    What firing drill do they have to be set on, is it volley fire?

    I've done as you said, and tested it on the grassy flatlands. For some reason, all 3 ranks fire, and I have to say it's really destructive. It's a bit tricky to use, because there is no sustained damage with 3 ranks firing, its just who gets the first volley of first wins.

    Hakomar: without tweaks to battle entities all three ranks will fire... if you adjust the values as i told you, only firs two ranks will fire...

    Or just download my little mod, it's easier.
    I even added more ammo, without it your units will eat it up in seconds.

    its in battle entities, look for values behind elipse - default is 1, change it to 0.1 for infantry and you will see

    Do you mean the one after distance to pick charge target, or after the circle/elipse collumn?

    P.S. I had it quite perfectly for a while, then it reverted to 3 rank fire, on the grassy flatlands.

    its linked with more variables, especially you must have battle entity set to ellipse for all infantry

    Hmm...I did so like in tutorial but they fired like light infantry they made mass fire. No two rank fire. All lines were pretty messed up.

    as mentioned before (in some post) this is only possible if you reduce unit spacing. second thing is to alter the values i mentioned in battle entities. And last, you must be sure your LOS values are set for default and not higher - if LOS values are higher, soldiers in rear ranks will be able to fire even with very tight formations...

    Will doing this make my game incapable of multiplayer gameplay? What if the people playing have both modified the pack files?
