No problem! I know twelve is a paltry number compared to what you need to collect, but I will work on finding more when I have time... which should be soon (spring break starts tomorrow, hurrah!). Just tell me in which character category you're most lacking suitable portraits, so I can know what breed of man to search for.

@ Viscount Bolingbroke: Thanks again for your help! Right now I'm working on the king portraits, so if you come across any gentlemen that have that regal look, feel free to post them here. The higher the resolution, the better! (Viscount Bolingbroke's late portrait will certainly be turned into a king )

@ BorisGudonov:Thanks for your comment! Would you mind putting that list between spoiler tags? Just edit your post (choose "go advanced"), select the entire list and click the button with the big !. That'll keep your post length down a little..

In any case, I'm not sure what to do to help you out. It works fine for me and, as far as I can see, it works fine for everybody else who downloaded it. Are you sure you installed it correctly? Also, what exactly is the problem when you say it doesn't work? Which parts don't work?

I had some free time today so I gathered 54 portraits. I basically used the index of Durant's Age of Voltaire, and then Wikipedia/Google, in finding the portraits of suitable figures. Some might be more fitting for ministers than kings, but I'll let you decide:

Thanks Monny , but don't overlook all the fine work of jarnomiedema, who has put far more effort into pursuing historical accuracy and immersion than I have! You can see some of the brilliant stuff he has done on the first page. This mod is another reason for you to purchase ETW .

Absolutely awesome, VB! I already had quite a few of those, but there are some that I missed and will certainly use in the future. I'm now over halfway done with the graphics for the Kings and intend to finish the work on that section sometime today or tomorrow.

If you're interested, I could send you a version to test out and critique before I decide to release it to the community?

Speaking of releasing, seems that BorisGodunov was partially right about the problems. Yesterday, after restarting Steam because of a client update, my mod didn't work anymore either. Seems that Empire automatically updated itself to 1.6 and as a result, my mod requires a little bit of work to reactivate. Nothing serious though: if you have the Pack File Manager, open up the mod file you downloaded and resave it. As far as I know, that should fix the problem..

That's a temporary solution though, I'll probably upload an updated version of the full mod and the seperate mods sometime tomorrow.

    Now, back to the portraits!

That's great news, Hip63. For all the good that the DMUC has done for me, I'm glad I can now give something back to that part of the community! I might not be very good at the technical aspects behind the game, but I'll never give up trying to make it better looking!

Speaking of that.. I spent most the day working on something else instead of the portraits, so I'm afraid it'll be a little bit longer before I release the King portraits.. I think that when you see what I've been working on, you'll forgive me..

Presenting.. *drumroll* ..a new look for the campaign minimaps!

As you can see, I'm still working on India.. Shouldn't be much longer! Besides, this way it makes a nice comparison between the 'old' Creative Assembly style maps and these new and improved campaign maps!

Oh, and a big thank you goes out to Okuto, who supplied me with the original grand campaign .tga files after I accidentally managed to overwrite my own originals.. Thanks again Okuto!

Well I like Europe and the East Indies on the Minimaps, they fit nicely. Can you get the others 2 fit the same way? Anyway nice concept. The Grand Campaign Selection Menu is looking very nice indeed.

Jarnomiedema, you are the true saviour of ETW art! Incredible work, mate.

Regrettably I'm out of town for spring vacation until Friday, so I probably won't be able to test the next version before you release it... but you can bet I'll download it as soon as I get home.

    For now, adieu!

New Files Uploaded! Thanks for the comments guys! I've just uploaded all the new files to both MegaUpload and MediaFire. They should now be fully compatible again with E:TW 1.6. After downloading these new files, simply extract them to Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data, and replace the existing files. That should fix everything if you already downloaded the old files!

Reply @TheJian: Unfortunately, it turned out to be impossible to change the sizes of the American and Indian main theatres and the various trade theatres. It seems their respective sizes are coded somewhere. Also, if you look at the original graphics, that's the way they've basically always been structured. I'm afraid I can't be much help in this particular case.. Still, I'm glad you liked the result!

Historical Minimaps I've updated the first post with new info on the historical minimaps, I've added more info in the third post and I've added the new download links in the fifth post.

Here are the new screenshots for the Historical Minimaps:

To give you guys some further info, in case you're interested in doing some of your own research / modding, the greatest help for this part of the project have been these amazing websites: Swaen.com, for their excellent high definition, highly detailed historical maps of just about every part of the world and EurAtlas.com, for their historical map of Europe in 1700, which I used as an inspiration for the new border structures.

    Hi jarnomiedema,

I would like to do same in NTW that you do in ETW, that is to replace the portraits of generic admirals and generals with the historical originals. But I have never modded these files before, so if you could point me in the right direction, it could save me for a lot of time. I need to know what files to edit and how. I can put in the time and find my own portraits, but a little "How to ..." would be nice.

Amazing work. This is how the game should have looked from the beginning. Can't wait for the portraits to be completed.

You are going to see those, it because the new portraits override the orginal portraits, what you are seeing is normal

Phew.. Now there's a question.. I would love to help you out, but it's a pretty lengthy process to explain. Suffice to say, you need the Pack File Manager, a graphics program that allows you to edit .tga files (Photoshop is what I use), a whole lot of patience and a giant amount of source images..

Use the Pack File manager to open up the pack files in the data folder in the installation directory of Napoleon, and look for a file structure that goes something like +ui > +portraits > +european > +general / +king / etc. Click on the UI directory until it's selected, right click; select 'extract selected' and choose a directory. That'll extract all the portraits into the directory you specified, allowing you to edit them at will..

One word of advice though: you're going to have to make the ovals yourself. That proved to be my biggest hurdle. After I managed to make an oval that I was reasonably satisfied with, things started moving a lot faster. If you don't make the oval, the smaller versions of your portraits will be squares..

Good luck! Also, if you don't have any modding experience yet, I can really recommend that you start out small and work your way up from there. I personally started out with retexturing a bunch of units first to get my footing in how modding the game works and from there I started trying new things..

As Hip63 said, the conflicts are a normal part of the modding. All of the textures that have been replaced in-game (such as the event messages, loading screens, etc.) all conflict with the original textures. That's why that number is so high. So there's no problem to worry about. If the mod doesn't work after you activated it in mod manager and played the game, let me know and I'll help you out.

Thanks! The portraits are coming along nicely. I've now almost retextured all the kings, plus there are now historical leaders for when you start the game in 1700 and if you decide to play the game as the United States in the fourth part of the Road to Independence campaign. So if you want to piss off King George III all over again, you can now to it to his historically accurate likeness..

Campaign Map Graphics - Version 3 coming up! For the past few days I've also been working on another little secret project. Besides the city graphics and the farm fields, the campaign map of Empire always felt a bit bland as well. Especially after playing a little bit of Napoleon, the difference was immense. Going back to Empire after a little bit of Napoleon was kind of a letdown really. The campaign map just felt a little too green and a bit light on the details..

So, I decided to 'fix' that as well.. Presenting: version 3 of the Campaign Map graphics, now with improved ground, river and road textures!

In these comparison screenshots, you can see an overview of France in the spring and closeups of Paris in spring and winter. The top part of each screenshot is my new and improved version of the campaign map, while the bottom part is what the campaign map looks like originally. Enjoy!

As you can see, the ground texture now has a bit of a hilly, mountainous feel to it, while also being somewhat darker. The rivers are more dirty and muddy and the roads (in this case the highest level of road) is more pronounced and detailed.

Hope you guys enjoyed this little update! Now back to work for me..

is there a way to get rid of this upsetting transparent camera location quadrad on the mini map that makes the minimap mainly unusable ???
