    Default Norway loves Gronigen?

So, playing as England to go back to my original M2TW roots, playing SS 6.2, latest RR/RC version.

Been playing with extreme chivalry as my goal, and its working. Perfect reputation, lots of high chivalry generals, all my prisoners released. The Pope loves me, and I don't attack catholic factions unless they get excommed. But these damn Norwegians...

Every turn, and I mean every turn, they land a force on the coast above Gronigen, and siege the city. It happened out of the blue the first time, and then EVERY time I kill their army another one arrives next turn and it repeats. On the plus side my general there is damn good, but it's getting a bit annoying. I've got a full garrison there and I'm reinforcing it every turn, but they just keep landing these full stacks with lots of professional troops.

I don't wish to attack them directly as I'm trying very hard to behave as a proper catholic in the game. I have arranged multiple ceasefires and even married a daughter to one of their generals but the next turn they just break any deals we had and attack again. I just don't understand, especially since my reputation is perfect. Both Norway and myself also have full papal support (10 crosses) and theirs never goes down, but i've been threatened with Excom several times when I sally out.

Just wondering if its a bug, known issue, historically accurate or anything like that? I am going to have to attack them soon simply to protect my empire, and take the repuation hit. I can always buy it back, but I'm trying so hard!! I usually play full dread, so I understand backstabbing but not with full chivalry and perfect rep...

    Okay, end rant. Whew.

Side note, not being able to use assassins sucks due to rep hit... I miss my little daggers in the dark,

It's been my experience in SS6.2 that If I'm allied with the Pope, he'll drop me in an instant, if another faction he's allied to attacks me. So I usually go ahead and spill as much blood as necessary, then buy me way back into his good graces...

Maybe you can buy the Danes to attack Norway? Or build a superior navy and kill all those stacks on sea. The Pope might dislike you for the latest, though.

Screw the Pope. March on Rome and put a bodkin arrow thru his eye, then give rome to the Moors. On your way home Sack and exterminate every town along the way so that the world will fear and tremble at the mere thought of "William the Bastard" Put a Norman boot against all their throats...

Sound advice. But as Landtuber wanted to behave like a good catholic, probably not exactly the perfect way to deal with the pope... Nice plan, anyways.

I've done the building a navy to keep them away thing, but pope gets very upset. Also, their fleets can reach from their docks to my shores in 1 move, so they just move around my fleets and don't care about losing their 1 boat next turn.

I'm already allied with the Danes, and I liked your suggestion about getting them to attack Norway, I'll try that next!

You can put several fleets around their docks, so that they can't escape.

By the way, having lots of alliances with people you'll never fight offsets the rep hits from almost anything

Simplest answer is like Joris said... put 3 fleets around their docks. 3 is all you need to block them and 2 fleets should be able to reinforce each other at all times. If you want put another little fleet couple tiles out from their favorite landing spot... even if the AI gets another fleet somewhere else it likely will run into yours and lose movement and next turn you can trap it.

Thank you as well for the suggestions regarding fleets around their docks, no idea why I didn't think of that....

If the navy thing is just role play then okay, but if not you might want to add up your maintenance costs and make sure your not wasting money. I usually never field a navy in the beginning except for transportation barges...

Update: The Danes won't even consider attacking them. Even tried saving the game, adding a LOT of money via cheats and then trying again, couldn't do it. Surrounding their ports is working fine, and my economy is going more than strong enough (about ~170k florins is where my treasury is floating around) to not care really about the costs.

At least now I can mostly ignore them. Especially since France just got excom'd for some reason, and a crusade was called on their fortress near the bottom of their territory. Got 5 full stacks on crusade rampaging my way through their lands currently, 3 cities and a fortress fallen so far, the French days are numbered!

Also the Republic of Genoa got exom'd as well, so they are next, .

Maybe, after all that, if Norway is still annoying me I'll finally snap and wipe em out.

Fleets are still probably same cost or less as suffering an invasion and siege every few turns. 3 fleets of 3 ships cost maybe 1800 per turn vs cost of 12-15 units in garrison above the free slots and the several 100s cost of sieges and retraining defending units.

Fleets are the most cost effective unit in the game. Though you can make arguments for diplomats and assassins at certain points as well.

Give the pope massive amounts of florins per turn. Then crush whatever pathetic catholic nations dare resist your awesome power. The pope is a greedy old bastard who'll forget your sins for sufficiently large and frequent quantities of cash. As long as you pay him, and make sure to release troops you kill, you'll be able to keep your papal favor and your immaculate reputation.
