Default Child Slavery and high street choclate

As many people will know that most choclate is sourced in west africa but you may not know the bitter truth about choclate. Child Slavery is common among coco farms. The fact is that children are trafficed from nations bordering the coco producing nations and then they are forced to work without education and the money going to the farm owners and then on to western high streets.

My oppion is that all child slavery should be stopped and companys witch buy from slave farms should be fined.

    What is your oppion

    Source plz!
I check into small hotel a few kilometers from Kiev. It is late. I am tired. I tell woman at desk I want a room. She tells me room number and give key. "But one more thing comrade; there is one room without number and always lock. Don't even peek in there." I take key and go to room to sleep. Night comes and I hear trickling of water. It comes from the room across. I cannot sleep so I open door. It is coming from room with no number. I pound on door. No response. I look in keyhole. I see nothing except red. Water still trickling. I go down to front desk to complain. "By the way who is in that room?" She look at me and begin to tell story. There was woman in there. Murdered by her husband. Skin all white, except her eyes, which were red. I tell her I don't give a . Stop the water trickling or give me refund. She gave me 100 ruble credit and free breakfast. Such is life in Moscow

I am well aware of the issue - I only buy fairtrade chocolate because of it. Well done for posting about it here.

If not sued into oblivion or closed down forcibly.

    What is your opinion?
If true, it's a horrible thing and there should be stopped.
On the other hand, I likes my chocolate.

    Great!

So now if I want to be ethical, I can't eat meat, cheese, or #@$#@$ing chocolate?!?!?

    Seriously, wtf?

-In reality, this is terrible, but I guarantee you that no one in power gives a flying care.

Pretty much the same. If proven that a source is using slavery, and it is a major problem, then that source should be immediately dropped under threat of a severe fine.

Here is a source from the BBC
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode..._Bitter_Truth/

It is shocking and the choclate companys know that their sources are using slavery and making the children use swords.

If a choclate bar with coco that has been gathered by child slaves it should be forced to have a image saying it used child labour.

I watched the program last night [the bitter truth], it bugged me most when they showed some trader sitting next to his pc, a single click and he bought some beans and guess what, a few minutes later they went from 20 to 100 [points I think or maybe it was dollars per kilo, not sure]. So while child slaves are being taken from their families to work long hours making the raw product, everyone else up the chain were earning fortunes.

Then they asked how it could be stopped, well accountability comes to mind, the growers should belong to either a distinct business [or govt [nationalised]] rather than a random collection of farmers. Then that company would be responsible! It makes you wonder why this is not already so, my guess is that it suit’s the buyers as it is.

Most of the stuff we own in the first world come from slaves who get paid less than $3 per week working 12-16 hours a day in horrible conditions.

Last I checked most chocolate came from Middle/South America... then again Hershey probably lied to me.

Based on the conditions in West Africa, working as a slave on a coco farm may well be a lifestyle upgrade.
