Default Arguement for removing "Rep" & other awards from TW center altogether

    Hi all,

I believe that it is unethical to have reputation points in the TW center,
Which is why my Rep point accumulator is disabled in case you wondered why!

    Why?
The mod/art/literary work that a person does here should be confined to just acknowledging the person and not the bestowal of titles, crowns, awards and "Rep points."
Besides this internet site is not a business.

Incidentally, If you ARE that good than others should know by word of mouth.

I believe that co-operation is better than competition and if one person decides to do something, they should be willing to share openly.
BTW, I'm not saying that people here do not share intellectual property and such, I'm merely trying to make a point of non-competitiveness.

I think rep should be private automatically.

    Yeah...I could see that...

I remember last year a new person joined the forum...I distinctly remember seeing their "hi I'm a new member...please take care of me" greeting and all that...

I swear to you...less than a week later they had @1,000 posts...maybe not a 1,000 but it was some outlandishly high number for less than a week of being a member...I saw they had posts in nearly every forum...

Now they're like a moderator or something like that...

I don't know what post counts count for but if it'll prevent...people...from spamming posts for some cyber prize...

    I'm all for eliminating them.

If someone discounts a good post by another simply because the person who posted it doesn't have enough rep, then they are foolish to say the least. I also really doubt this happens very often.

I question the intelligence of someone who prefers someone with 400 rep points, 1,000 points, citizen membership over someone with 50 posts and 4 rep points just because of that factor. If so, I wouldn't exactly want to even try to appeal to that type of person at the expense of others getting off to their badges, posts, rep, coloured names, etc.

Na, it is depending on personal view. I have been here five years and still not get citizenship - do I care, no I don't (actually I was too lazy to write a recommanded letter).

Same. The only reason I'd get off my ass and go through the hoops for site citizenship is to be able to have a custom user title. And that's not compelling enough of a reason.

Well, someone did invite me to get a citizenship, but I guess it is personal embarrassment (cannot really write I contribute a lot in old game babe thread, even though half of major contributors of that thread become citizens today) and laziness (like I said, writing a whole recommand letter and then feeling the pressure of checking from all seniors are not suited for me) that really stop me.

Overall, I just don't find it worth all troubles to gain some red banner of "Citizen".

May I join the slacker club?

Many forums I have been through have no rep system for just that reason. But then again, on TWC, rep is not mandatory, and like the OP we can choose to voluntarily turn it off, so no problem out there.

Plus, most of those who are citizens are... let's just say, much better than your faithfully in their respective region of expertise.

Who is competitive about rep points? Who are these people? If they are dismissing ideas and threads because someone else doesn't have enough posts or reps, who cares about their attention or opinion anyways?

I think 'unethical' is a little dramatic...unethical would be, say, stealing someone's mod ideas and rolling it up into your own (please nobody read into this...I know so little about modding I couldn't even cite an example). Or, say, telling my wife that my computer lacks the RAM to properly run our house budget software, and that we need much much more, and that I'm sure we could save even more money if I got a vid card upgrade.

So, you turned off your rep counter to make a point. OK, noted, that's cool. But dude anyone who cared to begin with wasn't worth the time you took to turn off the option.

    cheers mate!

" Don't take rep points to seriously."

    Pannonius,

Quite right. When your debating skills are overtaken by the distraction of a harmless awards system, something perhaps never envisaged to grow as it has done, then sit back and be happy for them that get all these pointers. At the end of the day what do they mean? I for one don't personally know any of who is out there, getting only glimpses of their character by what they say. It is my response that defines how good or bad they are and so it should with all the debaters here. To me it is just harmless fun and should be left alone.

As far as debating goes, if you are appealing to the masses then you're obviously doing something wrong - politicians appeal to the masses. And especially wrong when you consider that the majority of the 'masses' here are probably not even adults yet.

I do think that rep for making someone laugh with a stupid comment, then being added to rep for working for 1000s of hours on code, is very silly indeed.

I'd like to see rep removed for all except artifex ( if you agree then don't +rep me, you muppet!!! )

I've always been kind of cynical about rep so one time i decided to try and see how much rep i could get in a week and during that week my rep doubled.

The methods i used were pretty lame.

The easiest way to get rep seems to be to rep a whole heap of people and add your name.

The more extremist, unpopular or silly the comment you rep, the more likely it seems to be that they will rep you back.

Also if you say something very extreme that doesn't completely make sense, 80% of people will hate you for it, but 10% will give you rep.

I don't pay much attention to rep anymore.

    @ Taiji, I couldn't resist rep'ing

I don't think I have ever given anyone on here any rep ever.

    Well, i like rep systems.

I think it`s an quick and easy way to tell someone that you like what he wrote. It`s also quicker than writing a pm or an answer.

And if people think it`s a competition or some kind, why maybe it encourages those people to write good posts- Which obviously is good, too.

Members should not be jugded by the amount of rep they have- People who are a bit experienced with the internet will know this, anyway.
