    Default Lesson 4

    Lesson 4 the GIF

Things you will need for this lesson. Please download this image or find a similar image of your liking.

For those of you that don't know what a GIF image is here is a quick explanation care of Wiki:
    What is a GIF?
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.
The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel allowing a single image to reference a palette of up to 256 distinct colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame. The color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.
GIF images are compressed using the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression technique to reduce the file size without degrading the visual quality. This compression technique was patented in 1985. Controversy over the licensing agreement between the patent holder, Unisys, and CompuServe in 1994 spurred the development of the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) standard; since then all the relevant patents have expired.
It is the animated Gif we will focus on this week. So let's go!
    Step 1Create a new image 100 x100.
    Step 1 Image
Step 2After you have your new image ready. Open up the Rust image with Photoshop and cut paste it into your created one. This will become our background. Place it in the image where you wish and scale it down if you feel want.

Step 2a - After that we will add some text. Use your Alias please. It doesn't have to be your full name but It should be no less than 5 characters long. Select the font you like and set the text size so it takes up a large portion of the image. Type the first letter of your name then duplicate your text layer as many times as you have letters. I have eight = SUBUATAI.
    Step 2a Image
Step - 3Now we are going to add some minor effects to the fonts. Follow the white rabbit below.
    Step 3 Images

In above step you will need to load the "Metals" gradients select the silver gradient and adjust the colours to these: Ends and centre to 2e2e2e and the 25 and 75 to d0d0d0

Now we are done One letter copy and paste the effects to the other letter layers.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Step -4Now that we have some text that looks cool we can start our animation. Turn off every layer except your base layer (the rust BG) Next go to the Window menu and scroll down to Animation. It should open up a new box on the bottom called Animation. Note: I am using CS4. CS2 I think has a button on the sidebar called "Image ready" you should get a similar looking menu.
Next click "Duplicates Selected Frames" at the bottom right next to the Garbage can for the number of letters you have. Then make sure you have your second frame selected then go over to your layers menu and click on your first letter. For the next frame you will click on the 2nd letter and so forth.
    Step 4 Images

Now all you need to do is adjust the timing to your liking. In my final version I have set the first frame to 5 second and the letters to 0.5 seconds. Lastly we will make one frame with your full name. So duplicate your last letter layer edit the text to say your name. Create a new frame of the background and add the name layer to the frame. ( I know this is backwards but I had a brain fart.) Set the refresh to forever so that the image plays over and over and over. Located right below my first frame in the last image.
LastlyGo File Save for Web & Device then a new window will appear leave all the setting as default and click save. Name is subuatai_lesson4 (replace my name with yours)
    Last steps

My PSD file for you to compare if need be.
POST YOUR COMPLETED GIF IMAGE FOR LESSON CREDIT.

You uploaded the pictures to an album, and had it set to private. I've set it to public, so everyone can view it, not just you and your contacts and mods/admins.
