Default The Melodic Death Metal Thread

I'm making new thread regarding melodic death metal (some viking may coincide also). I'll list all my favorite melo death bands for you to try out, and show me yours :] who knows, maybe your a Melodic death metal fan in waiting!

    We'll start with...

INSOMNIUM:YES. I'm ashamed I did not hear of Insomnium earlier. The day I heard this band I honestly listened to every song (60+) and I just could not get enough. In my opinion they are the kings of the melodic death metal scene. INSOMNIUM manages to pull strings in your brain creating a phenomenon called an eargasm. One of their most notable albums "In The Halls of Awaiting". Insomnium has released 4 albums, 3 contain only death metal vocals and the newest one [Across the Dark] flirts with clean vocals and honestly it still sounds like insomnium. If you like In Flames you'll LOVE Insomnium CHECK THEM OUT!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

DARK TRANQUILITY: This is the band that really got me into melodic death metal, they are considered to be the pioneers of Melo death (along with In Flames and At The Gates). The great thing about DT is that they always stay consistent but every album has it's own feel, they just released a new album last month called "We are the Void". If you haven't checked out DT, you should.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

AT THE GATES: I'm not really a huge fan of ATG, but it's worth mentioning them because of how important they are to the genre. If your a fan of thrash you may like this band because they do have that feel, while being consistent with melodic death, check out their album "Slaughter of the Soul"

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

AUTUMN LEAVES:Now THIS band is really a jewel among melodic death metal, but the sad thing is is that they're very rare to find due to the lack popularity. If you can manage to get your hands on their album you'll definitely be blown away. The song "The Discovery" sends chills down my spine.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

BE'LAKOR: I've just gotten into this band recently! and all I can say is WOW! They reign from Australia of all places. They're new to Melo death scene and take influence from bands such as Insomnium (See below)

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

GODGORY: Again, not the biggest fan but they do have some good songs I like, including their cover acoustic (Sea of Dreams).

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

IN FLAMES: Yeah, You've most likely heard of In Flames. They're earlier stuff is a MASTERPIECE whereas their latest album [Come Clarity] is garbage IMO.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

NOUMENA: Now this band is definitely unique. If your a fan of Nightwish you may like this band due to the fact that they include a female vocalist in their latest album.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

ARCH ENEMY: This is a unique band by the sense that they have a female vocalist. She either turns you on or she scares you. Enjoy!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

THE ABSENCE: You can think of these guys as perhaps a melodic Lamb of God, very heavy! Check them out.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

KALMAH: Wow, I just discovered this band (Thanks to Godfrey). Wow these guys just.. Wow me! I love the heavyness and catchy riffs they write. mmm. Metalgasm.

To do the youtube embedding all you need to do is take the part of the end.

e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYIj7eDz8X0. Take the highlighted part and put in in between the youtube tags.

Missed out Children of Boredom too. Aptly named though, I almost did fall asleep at one of their gigs.

I agree Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth and CoB should be shown, however I see CoB as a mixture between Power and Melo.

Where did he say it was black metal? In fact he distinctively pointed out how it was death metal.

Yup :] And that's only the tip of the ice berg, their other stuff is just as good or better but it's not on youtube because they're not very popular at all.

May i intrude here and ask what the point in melodic death metal is? Surely if you have the stomach to listen to insane men growling on about whatever it is they are saying with ridiculously distorted guitar hacking and beating to death of the drumkit, it doesn't really matter whether there is a melody in there or not?
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

I think you're missing the point. I think your referring to Death metal... Melo Death and pure Death metal are COMPLETELY different.

Lyrically Death metal resides around death, around killing things, being killed, violence, etc.

Whereas Melodic Death metal is more so based around melancholy and depression, perhaps happiness in some cases and the music has more melody to it than Hitting drums as fast as you can and ridiculous guitar shredding which just sounds like noise.

    For example.

Take time and listen to this. Right away you can sense melody, sadness, etc. This song to me is very passionate. Personally I'd rather listen to something passionate then something about Getting laid or gettings lots of money. You can hear the sadness in his voice. Personally when I listen to metal I count the vocals as an instrument because to me that's what they are.

Now, if you listen to this, you'll see the difference. This is Cannibal Corpse (IE, Death metal)

Well that does make it a lot clearer, i can see the difference. Melodic DM actually sounds quite good. Make no mistake, i hate most hip hop and inane dancepop, i'm a certified metalhead. I just really have something against growled vocals. I prefer Prog metal and math metal, eg Tool, Pain of Salvation, etc, which is similar in its intensity yet you can actually hear the lyrics. It takes a lot of skill to be a metal guitarist, but imo it takes a lot more skill to be an effective metal singer (without growling or screaming), maynard james keenan being the paradigm.

Well, you'd be hardpressed to find clean vocals in MDM(melo death) but they do exist! I had a very confined taste when I started into metal, If the song didn't have clean vocals I simply didn't listen to it until I realized how much more passionate growls can be than singing. I actually started liking metal to impress this girl back in 7th grade and it just stuck to me from there... funny story lol.

Anyways. This is a newer Insomnium song which actually has clean vocals throughout the song, Give it a try :] Also... I'm sure you've heard of Opeth, some of the most beautiful vocals mixed with some nice death metal vocals, Although they're classified as Progressive Death metal but whatever : P

This is fantastic -- I love clean vocals and growls overlayed like in the beginning of the vocals (unless I'm hearing things )

I need to look into them more, definitely...

Meh, I love both hip-hop and metal. Actually come to think of it I like most music...

I think it's important to be Open.

I mean, when I'm at a party I don't listen to Death metal because well... It's hard to dance with people with doublekicks going off in the background

When I'm alone, or with some friends. I/we listen to Metal.
