Quick question, is there a list of names i could use for characters for the men of Demos. It just doesn't feel right calling someone Barry or Joe...please feel free to suggest names. Cheers

If you look into the descr_names file in your Thera folder under the faction saxons, you'll see all you want.

Thanks, only one small problem. I do most of my writing at work now....during breaks of course. So if anyone would be kind enough to share with me that would be great. Cheers.

A snippet from the next part.

'The Legionarri drifted through the forest, a light mist ebbed its way between the trees as the Romuli headed towards the camp of the men of Demos. The Legionarii had smeared themselves with dirt, grease and bits of twigs hung from their armor, now looking like ghosts from some long ago battle risen from their graves. The men guarding the picket’s lines were weary the night almost over, most hoping for some sleep before the chase resumed. A patrol ambled past, theirs eyes heavy under their helms, mist swallowing them as they disappeared into the night. The patrol made their way around the camp, other guards and patrols coming and going. Weaving their way through the dense trees they never saw the men suddenly rise up out of the thick undergrowth blades quickly finding targets as the patrol seemed to be swallowed up by the ground. Wiping his blade on a fallen Demos dog Maximus, Anthony and their fifty grim Legionarri continued on.'

Toke – Commander of the Men of Demos

    ‘To Dance in the Darkness’

The Legionarii continued to make their way through the thick forest, sunlight casting solid beams of light through the thick canopy overhead. The beams of bright light breaking up the shadows in a chaotic dance of darkness and light as the men of the Romuli played a deadly game of cat and mouse with the pursuing forces. Maximus, with Anthony and fifty other legionarii formed the rear guard; they knew that at least two forces of six hundred men were near the Legionarii as they made their tactical retreat back to Arretium. The men of Demos now displayed some sense of caution after finding the gruesome display left by the Legionarii. The enemy moved slowly through the forest, scouts out wide, hoping to avoid another lethal ambush. The new commander of the Demos, Toke, a veteran of many fights, hoped to catch the force he now chased. He was glad that the young fool of a commander was dead and now tried to make up for the armies earlier failings. He hoped to use his two forces to pin the fleeing Legionarii between them, and then he would make up for the past insults to his great nation and his sense of righteous.

Clad in only light leather Anthony watched the men of Demos labour up and down the shallow dips and rises of the forest as they sort to catch up with his fellow Legionarii. Anthony noted that runners now approached a group of men, one clearly giving orders to the waiting runners, this one looked a bit more competent than the last, he had a decent screen of scouts out and kept his men in good order. Anthony melted back into the forest as the sun continued to chase clouds across the deep blue sky.

Anthony came jogging out of the trees to where Maximus and the rest of the men waited, each man wearing only light leather armourand armed with just their gladius and two pilum each. These men were to skirmish with the men of Demos; the plan was to slow, not to be embroiled in a pitched battle. Other Legionarii came jogging back from different directions to where their Centurion waiting for their reports.
‘It seems the so called men of Demos have a new commander, who actually seems to have half a brain hanging between his legs. I have the feeling we may need to do something about this one.’
‘What do you suggest?’ asked Maximus.
‘I heard a story once about you and your brother, something about night raids upon unsuspecting merchants and their daughters. We could do something along those lines, but without the deflowering of merchants daughters,’ he finished speaking with a smile on his face.
‘Well I see what you’re saying; send some men out to watch them. When night falls and if it’s an option well pay them a visit,’ said Maximus, he watched Anthony give orders quickly, his mind drifted back to the night Anthony was referring to, a small smile crept across his face.

The Legionarii drifted through the forest, a light mist ebbed its way between the trees as the Romuli headed towards the camp of the men of Demos. The Legionarii had smeared themselves with dirt, grease and bits of twigs hung from their armour, now looking like ghosts from some long ago battle risen from their graves. The men guarding the picket’s lines were weary, the night almost over, most hoping for some sleep before the chase resumed. A patrol ambled past, their eyes heavy under their helms, mist swallowing them as they disappeared into the night. The patrol made their way around the camp, other guards and patrols coming and going. Weaving their way through the dense trees they never saw the men suddenly rise up out of the thick undergrowth, blades quickly finding targets as the patrol seemed to be swallowed up by the ground. Wiping his blade on a fallen Demos dog Maximus, Anthony and their fifty grim Legionarii continued.

The Legionarii made their way deeper into the Demos camp, killing as many men as they could as they headed towards the commanders tent, death now stalked deep into the camp of the men of Demos, more than a hundred men slain in their sleep as the Legionarii hoped to add fear to the already nervous foe. Gaping wounds were left behind as the Romuli hunted for the commander.

Toke stumble out of his tent into the chilled night air, must be getting old, he thought to himself as he made his way to the latrine pit for the third time that night. Making his way past tents and sleeping men, smoke from cooking fires and a thin mist drifted past as men snored and mumbled in their sleep. Eyes bleary Toke saw a dark shape standing over a group of sleeping men, suddenly a blade stabbed down in quick succession. The shape saw the commander standing there, it quickly moved towards him as he stood dazed, his mind hazy from sleep and long marches. The blade snapped out at the grizzled commander, the experience earned from long hours of training and countless battles kicked in as Toke dodged the blow.

One hand grabbed the wrist of the strange earthen warrior as Toke’s other fist smashed into its face. Toke started to bellow, trying to warn his sleeping men, with a vicious twist he managed to pull the blade away from the warrior who jumped back pulling a long dagger from his belt. More men came barrelling out of the night, thankfully his own, and crashed into the strange warrior, blades stabbing in a frenzied attack. The warrior fell, but not before stabbing its knife into the throat of another of his men. More dark shapes attacked his men; they fell back under the wild assault. Screams and shouts of pain echoed into the night as more of his men became aware of the attack. Looking down Toke saw the body of the fallen warrior had disappeared with the other strange warriors, his men moved past as more and more moved to defend the camp.

The Legionarii ran through the night, dark shapes disappearing back into the trees as the sun began its assault upon the failing night sky, Toke stood amongst the bodies of one hundred and fifty of his own men, a trail of dead bodies leading up to his tent. He knew that if he hadn’t wandered off to urinate he would have been found hacked up like the rest of his fallen men. Two hundred of his men had tried to pursue the fleeing ghosts as his men were now describing them, but had failed to catch up as the apparitions melted into the night. No bodies were found of the warriors that had attacked the camp, only adding to the fear already growing in this army’s heart. Toke knew he needed to find these so-called ghosts and the fleeing Romuli and end this chase soon.

‘We failed to get the commander, he wasn’t in his tent…well it doesn’t really matter I have the feeling we may have caused more than physical damage last night. Some of the men have reported that the Demos dogs seemed reluctant to engage with them, one apparently just ran away screaming about ghosts…these men are on edge. I don’t think it will take much to push them over,’ Anthony reported to Maximus, both men still caked in grime and blood.
‘I think your right, but they won’t be such an easy target at night after the terror we brought to their camp. I believe most won’t sleep, even if they wanted to,’ Maximus said, looking weary after the night’s battle. Horns wailed in the distant forest, more answered from two other directions.
‘I think we should report back, sounds like another group has joined the hunt. The commander must be consolidating his forces. Legionarii move out.’ The tired group jogged off at a ground-eating pace.

The weary column staggered out of the trees onto the dirt road that lead back to Arretium, men dropping to the ground exhausted, the bright sun beating down on the remains of the Fifth Legion.Toke and his force were only half a day behind, but moving cautiously, a thick screen of scouts out.Spurius and his command group stood together, planning the final march back to the safety of Arretium when Anthony notice a lone horseman on the hill the road disappeared over, looking down at the battered men. The man wheeled his horse around and disappeared over the hill.
    ‘Romuli?’ asked Maximus.
‘Didn’t get a good look at his armour, he moved too fast,’ Anthony replied. Before the men could continue the spoken ofhorsemen poured over the hill and down the road towards the Legionarii. With a swirl of dust the horsemen surrounded the waiting men. When the dust settled a Legionarii rode forward, clearly the commander of this force.
‘Where’s Muckus? He I believe is the man in charge of what remains before me. I will need a detailed report of what has happened at Lonely Hill Fort.’
‘I’m Spurius. I was appointed as commander of the fort by Muckus before he left.’
‘Before he left…do you know where I would find him?’
‘Good commander look to your left, you will see Muckus,’ Spurius said, confused by the conversation so far. Domitius saw Muckus trying to turn his horse around, having been caught in the initial rush down the hill.
‘Hello Muckus, I think we have much to discuss. Starting with why you left your command post.’ Muckus went a slight shade of green.

Yeap Muckus will meet his end soon, but i like the idea of him falling into the wrong hands....something to ponder. I'm trying not to get a big head, but are you printing my story so far? If so...well thats really cool . Feel free to add screenies when you can since I've not mastered the art. Cheers.

Hello, next part please enjoy. This part is about Muckus and in his opinion, his own untimely death. Thanks to Grumpybean who gave the idea about him falling into the wrong hands. I was going to have him fight to the death against Anthony or Maximus but liked the other idea better. Cheers.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    ...

    Cast of Characters.

Maximus – Legionarii of the Fifth Legion
Leontius - Legionarii of the Fifth Legion – Brother to Maximus and Gallus - Deceased
Gallus - Legionarii of the Fifth Legion – Brother to Leontius and Maximus - Deceased
Brutus – Commander of the Fifth Legion – Deceased
Muckus – Ranking officer of the Fifth Legion
Aula – Whore – Tool of Callisto - Deceased
Spurius – Ranking officer of the Fifth Legion
Anthony - Legionarii of the Fifth Legion
Domitius – Commander of the Equites Lanciarii, Sword Master and legendary fighter

Toke – Commander of the Men of Demos

    ‘Muckus’

The Harsh sun glared down on Muckus, sweat dripped off his sharp nose, he waited for his fate to be decided, he sat tied to a tree on the side of the road leading back to Arretium, the thick forest at his back mocked him with its offers of cool shade and a place to hide if he managed to escape, a single Legionarii stood guarding him as the other men of the Fifth Legion and the newly arrived mounted Legionarii planned their next move. The guard didn’t look at him; not wanting to talk to the coward, this suited Muckus as he tried to release a hidden knife, most of the Legion didn’t consider him a threat, which again suited Muckus. He had some fine tutors on top of the usual training the Legions went through, and when he had bothered turning up to classes he did well. Muckus was competent with his gladius, but his true love lay with knife fighting, having spent his youth brawling, taking what he wanted and sometimes killing in the streets of Arretium, his family having the funds to cover any murders that might have caused problems for him. Muckus had grown up believing he could buy his way out of any situation, and when money didn’t work for him, his thugs would always make sure they found their problematic friend alone, making quick work of them, so now Muckus sat and thought hard on how or what he would do to get out of this little mess. Muckus knew that if he made it back to Arretium his family would make sure he disappeared until things settled, either that or his family was on good terms with a local assassins guild who could make his problems melt into the night. The knife finally came free; he quickly cut the bonds that held him as the foolish guard looked the other way.

Vibius waited in the hot sun as the fool Muckus sat tied to the tree, he hoped someone would come soon to relieve him from this boring task, I should just cut the fools throat, no one is paying any attention to us, he thought to himself, day dreaming about being the hero who slew the traitor Muckus. A slight sound from behind and Vibius’s day dreaming came to an end as Muckus’ knife slipped into his neck.

Muckus stood looking down at the dead Legionarii, dust and the sound of hundreds of men drowned out any sound he’d made. Thick blood dripped from his blade, looking around and seeing no one else about Muckus slipped into the trees, the shade a blessing after sitting in the sun, taking a drink from the water stolen from Vibius’ body he set off. Muckus hoped to now make his way back to the city and headed off in the direction he thought was the right one, unfortunately for Muckus he missed the class on how to tell the difference between east and west and now made his way towards the army of the Demos.

Muckus made his way through the forest, where is that damn road? He thought to himself as he staggered again, tripping on yet another root, the sun would soon fade as night reclaimed the sky from its bright friend. Muckus stopped and leaned against a large tree, wishing trees could provide more than shade, maybe one that leaked cool wine or had buxom women for fruit. As Muckus stood there his eyes closed as he dreamed of trees that leaked wine and had woman for the taking silent figures came upon him, clad in drab robes armed with maces and small shields, the priests of Callisto had found a new victim for their foul arts. Muckus sensed he wasn’t alone any more, he cracked his eyes open to find a grinning skull staring at him, reaching for his knife he tried to scramble backwards away from this walking nightmare. The priest’s mace smashed into Muckus shoulder, knocking him down to one knee, the next blow sent him into darkness.

Muckus awoke naked, his shoulder and head a mass of pain, one arm hung at his side and the other was free, his knife bound to his hand so he was unable to let go of the blade, again bound to a tree.Thepriestsstood around him watching, not saying anything. The setting sun casting everything in harsh colours, the priests started droning, a low horrible sound, Muckus pissed himself, other warriors came out of the gloom as the droning continued.

Toke stared at the lone Legionarii bound to the tree, the priests had already made a mess of him, his face covered in blood and one arm useless. His army was camped in the surrounding forest; the priest’s had come from the city Demos, somehow sensing that their fellow priest’s had met an untimely end at the battle of The Lonely Hill fort, turning up to replace their fallen comrades.
‘Tell me about your remaining men, where are they and how many live? Answer this and I’ll let you live and not let these dark men have their way with you,’ Toke said to the now trembling man. Muckus gazed at him, his mind thick with pain, he looked at the moaning skull faced priests, noticing a small bug fly into one dark eye socket and out the other, Muckus tried to speak.

Toke looked at the man moaning before him, trying to talk, but the priests of Callisto had hit him too hard, the man made no sense, oh well better luck with the next one, Toke thought.
‘He’s yours,’ Toke told the dark priests, not wanting to watch whatever foul practices they were about to perform, Toke walked off pondering whether he should continue the chase or send for more men. Toke knew he was in the lands of the Romuli now and the risk of finding another Legion in the area didn’t sit well with him.

Muckus watched as his arm started to rise, of its own accord, pain and the droning filling his head, the arm with the knife bound to it drifted across to his hanging arm. The blade sliced into his arm peeling off a sliver of flesh; again it sliced, more flesh dropping off as Muckus slowly skinned himself alive. Droning and mangled screams greeted the night; the moon rose above the lands of Thera as Muckus drew his last breaths, Muckus died half skinned by his own hand, naked and alone. Muckus last thought was, why like this, he wasn’t a bad person was he? Was he?

He was indeed a scumbag, even I'm glad he's dead and I made him up. I'm thinking in your honour Templar Knight I'm going to write into the story the Teutonic Order to spice things up, also the Lao Che will make an appearance. I'm thinking many massive battle lie ahead.

P.S - @GrumpyBean I had a look at your pic's in your profile, got to say nice work sir.
