Should I get this?

Alright so I always hear people saying this is THE best TW game. Should I buy it? It's really cheap now, but I still don't want to waste my money if it sucks.

YES BUY IT. especially if its really cheap, and if you like roman history it should be great. The game play and campaign are good as far as that goes, and there are a load of noobs online so if you want to try multiplayer it wont be like age of empires III where everybody has been playing for 3 years and you cant possibly win.

it depends on personal preferance, but i do like rome better.

"Better" is all a matter of opinion. Since you love M2TW, you will probably enjoy RTW if you are interested in the time period. RTW is the closest of the series to M2TW. The graphics will not be quite to the par of M2TW, and are far below NTW, but the gameplay is very similar to Medieval 2.

M2TW has improve gameplay in its on way EG diplomacy is better or there are different ways to fight like using gunpowder. However, RTW has something M2TW doesn't have, a bug free game play which lets you engage in good old infantry clashes. I have both games and I play RTW more, its simply damn addicting compared to M2TW which I play much lesser.

It´s for sure not the best TW-game vanilla-wise. What makes it one of the most popular games in the series are only the superb mods. But when it´s cheap enough you can´t go wrong. Give it a try.

edit: or maybe wait some years then you can play the best mod (Europa Barbarorum) even on M2:TW.

Make sure to get BI and alex aswell cause thier both awe-inspiring, plus Mods are great for bi and alex.

Also remember to make all factions playable or you only get half the experience.

Ok i have EVERY total war apart from rome, i love empire to death and really getting into napoleon... also i really like medtw and II and kindoms... but i keep thinking about getting rome and seeing as its so cheap i might do it Rome gold, Rome alexander for £9.99... quite interesting, the only problem is im a graphics whore i guess! but if the gameplay is that good i can look past that.

I love using mods and i see Darth has done a mod for rome... and if its half as good as the Empire one then ill be getting that aswell.

My basic question comes down to, is it worth me getting the game and how does it compare to the rest not graphics wise... but gameplay?

You are afraid of bad graphics? It is for sure not that outdated to be worried about. And when you install a good mod it gets only better, both graphic and especially gameplay-wise (this is what the vanilla game misses).
Only Shogun and Medieval graphics would be a pain for you.

GAMEPLAY = WIN. It has the Largest(as far as I know) unit size of the TW games(up to 240 men per unit, not modded), Cavalry charges are fast, Elephants are devestating, if you can run DM for Empire than RTW should run like a dream, and if you need to retreat Cavaly, they can turn on a dime, and stay as a block, no stragglers from the unit

If it's cheap, you should get it. Since it's pretty old now, you need not worry about system requirements. Other than that, once you've played the regular version enough, feel free to enjoy some of the many professional quality mods talented third party people have made. They're splendid, and you can get some great recommendations in the sticky thread. Other than that, yes, this game is excellent, and you will be playing it for a very long time.

I have no problems with steam, and I'm always connected to steam in the first place so i'm getting it on steam soon and steam has a 9.99 package deal with alexander AND r:tw gold.

yea you should get it the vanilla game is okay at best but once you get some mods the game really gets fun
