The original black & white version?
Unfortunately not... they had it as a criterion collection film... so it was all done up, but very expensive... it has subs... but it is out of print now... or perhaps that is just the distributor... but it should be out there somewhere...

I've watched the new Alexander Nevsky (interesting one, reminds me a lot of one Russian M&B mod and the main actor looks like my best friend) and the two Arn movies (2nd one seemed too rushed up, but still good), but hadn't heard of Taras Bulba (thanks for the link, reminds me I gotta find the Ogniem i Mieczem DVDs and re-watch them too, as well as the old B&W version of Al. Nevsky).
And the sketches seem good to me, as before.

    Damn it Nike!
    Now I am jealous!
I only have seen Arn... but I had to watch it in chunks on Youtube...

But if Ogniem i Mieczem is that Polish movie (With sword and fire) I watched that too... but again on Youtube...

I want to steal your DVD's now Nike... sleep lightly...

Oh, and thanks for the props about the updated sketches...

Great sketches mate, you've got talent. And yes the Communist period in Eastern Europe did have some good things about it. One of them were awesome historical movies, although I've only seen the Romanian ones, I know Serbia, Bulgaria, Russia etc. all had them. Too bad they're difficult to get to and usually without subtitles... I did watch 1612, it sucks they went all fantasy in it, had some awesome props and clothing.

    Thanks man.

Yeah I do love historical epics...
Though for Serbs, I think there are only 2... though I could be wrong...
Banovic Strahinja (which I have only seen a couple clips), and of course Boj na Kosovu...
Though I would like to watch others as well... no matter were they are from...

Yeah, 1612 was fun... but when you have a talking fish, and a dream teaching you to fence... yeah, it is skirting the edge of fantasy...
The worst thing is though... there is a section in the North American DVD, that is out of sequence... kind of annoying...
Still, I want to get the new Nevsky flick, and the original of course, and the new Taras Bulba... even if it is a bit later... as I usually jive with more the medieval periods...

I'm personally becoming more of a fan of rather recent Polish movies, they seem pretty well. Especially "Stara Basn. Kiedy slonce bylo bogiem" ("Old Fable. When the Sun was a god", if West-Slavic is still close enough as it seems). Though we indeed had a good number of Bulgarian historical movies (maybe 10 or so, most of them overshadowed by "Khan Asparuh").

Yes, the trailer for the new Alexander Nevski movie looks pretty good, but i still think the old black and white one seems more epic...not sure exactly why though. I checked out Khan Asparuh on youtube and nice surprise NikeBG had uploaded the whole movie and with subtitles aswell! Gotta love watching movies on youtube, that's actually how i watched 1612 and also Admiral (great russian movie about the White leader Admiral Kolchak).

Hohohooo, most definitely not the whole! Not even half of the shortened Warner Bros. version (which was horrible - bad English dubbing and horribly cut to fit an hour and a half movie). The whole original movie is actually a trilogy, maybe 6 hours altogether. I've uploaded it to the TPB, but it's only on Bulgarian. The only two movies that I've seen with foreign subs so far are "Time of violence" and "Mister for a day" (respectively a great classic, deep and very hard to watch movie about the violent Islamization of the Rhodopes in the early 17th century (though, as I like to point out, it's not simply a "vile Turk story", but a very deep one (the book is even more awesome though, as most by the same author)) and a folk-tragicomedy about a peasant from the 1930s trying to find money to pay his debts).

And, oh, East of Byzantium? Is it out already? I've wanted to see it ever since Nakharar founded the EoR mod because of it.

    Not Yet Nike...
But I hear they are taking it to Hollywood to get it filmed there...
They are basically calling it the Armenian Braveheart...
As long as they don't rape historical accuracy in the face like Braveheart did...
I still like the discussion that Mel Gibson had with a Scot about the Battle of Stirling...
Scot - "So your not going to put the bridge in the battle?"
Mel - "It gets in the way."
Scot - "The English though the same thing too."

Ha, i guess it's the usual Western mentality, who cares about showing historic events correctly, just cut it so we can sell it. That's why I always enjoy non-American movies so much more, they're about much than making a commercial product. Too bad it's not the whole movie, i really enjoyed what i saw...

We're going way off topic from the original post, maybe shud start a thread solely about Eastern European historical movies.
