Default Arms race and hole in the desert

This is a moment that I never though I would see playing EB ever again, discovering two completely new and different things in less than a minutes play!

Firstly, I was having a battle against some rebels near Augila (Africa), as the romani, and in the battle map I found something very peculiar, a hole in the dunes, quite a bit one (enough to fit a cohort inside, and quite deep too) with what looked like columns at two sides, and north-south there were two tunnels, with a little pathway connecting both at the bottom of the hole, with some rocks on it. Never seen that before. Anyone else see that?

And secondly, I am enjoying having a little naval arms race with the Ptolemaioi again as the Romani. They never bothered me or my navies, but started annoying my allies the greeks by sinking their ships, one of them with a full stack. Seeing as they are my protectorate, I had to intervene.

So I start with pentekoroi, they go to biremes and triremes. I use covered liburnias thinking wow they are awesome and they annoy me with triremes. I sink those, think the battle over, and see a lonely ship in the middle of the ocean. Send my liburne to investigate and what do I get? A frigging Nees Magistai Huge Poliremes catamaran thing with a 37 attack, 27 defence, 10000 recruitment, and a whopping 9000 upkeep. Needless to say my little ship, the pride of my navy, was destroyed.

I wonder what they will come against me with when I launch my quinquiremes?

Why care about the navy when you could have blitzed them with 7+ lfull stacks, if you have that much money to even think about maintaining a navy?

Because that would not be fun. I could have annihilated Egypt if I wanted to, or blockade all their ports, but I am not doing so out of choice. I am doing a lot of roleplay here, and am trying to play realistically, so Egypt will be last on my list of places to conquer, I still have the north of Iberia, Gaul, Anatolia, and then I will go to Egypt and the middle east. Also, I need a navy to transport my troops quickly from place to place, which is why I maintain a modest navy.

Its just as I like it, the only power who really challenged me navy wise was Carthage (which I destroyed) and then Greece, which is now my protectorate. Realistically, after defeating the two largest naval powers in the Mediterranean, I would enjoy a certain pax, and I did. But now it would seem the sons of Ptolemy have found a desire to challenge me, and its obvious they have the coffers to maintain this. So a naval arms race ensues, and so on.

Its not all about destruction and blitzing you know...

Sounds like the altar to the Philaeni (http://www.livius.org/cao-caz/cartha...thage_t03.html). I know it's in the game but I've never fought a battle there.

I agree with Knonfoda. Apart from solving initial finance problems, blitzing is boring.

Your campaign sounds like fun. Envious here.

Thanks, I'll post something in the ''Your Empire'' thread.

Well, it was just two squares away from Augila, and thats not where th altar is, thats a couple of squares northwest of there. Thing is I just fought a battle over the tile for the altars and there is nothing there
