Nearly a quarter of the world practiced it in 1990, but that figure has dropped to 17 percent. They say rates remain high in India.
Oh dear lord I am certainly glad I don't live in that 17% of the world.
As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

Well, it obviously has to do with more and more buildings being built, as time goes by.

Still, this whole report begs the question of who on earth thought it was an interesting idea to:

    1) Collect data on how many people defecate in the open
    2) Think to actually get the resources and manpower to investigate
    3) Wait twenty years and then do it again

The great useless organization called the United Nations. Hell why not spend that time and effort to actually help the world. "Hey lets spend this bag of money on feeding starving people." "No man lets spend it on watching people poop outside!" Thats why the UN is a worthless organization.

I'm sure you're young so I both feel bad for replying and slightly forgive your ignorance...however: what happens when people poop outdoors? It goes into the nearest water source. Where do people get their water? The same, close water source. That creates a ton of diseases. Just educating people in 'if you poop here, you will die of cholera' is a huge step, and has saved countless lives. It's easy to trivialize something you don't understand, especially when it has poopy in it, but really, this is great news.

    edit; No excuses for Thanatos.

The data was collected on availability of clean drinking water and basic sanitation. This was done to determine how many people/which areas are lacking it and then working together on decreasing that number because lack of basic sanitation is a severe health risk. The idea is to have nations work together on decreasing that number once the problem is known and identified.

Trivializing it in a manner of "uh, they count people who in the woods?" is missing the point.

After rereading the story I retract my claim that it was a waste of time. People do need to defecate in a safe place. However it seems that funds could have been better spent on more pressing issue.

@thefuzz. Yes I'm may be young but the quotations were to poke fun at the UN.

    Such as?

No, this is great. It reduces that chance of diseases and vastly increases the standard of living for 170 million people.
