    Default Changing Unit Abilities

Hi guys, I'm on my first attempt at modding Empire and I'd like to remove all the Wooden Stakes ability and replace it with Square Formation. So units like Light Infantry and Rifles would be able to form square rather than plonk stakes in the ground.

I've downloaded the DBEditor, and gone through the table that has all the unit abilities in and changed every reference to Wooden Stakes into Square Formation, but it hasn't worked. In game (which still runs fine) all the units still have stakes rather than square.

Also, I tried to follow the tutorial for adding more cannon to an artillery unit, but there have been no changes there either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You forgot to add your mod in the script file. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=240051

Ok, I'm still kind of confused though. Please bear in mind that I have never even attempted to mod Empire before.

I've installed that sample pack you linked to, but having added the cazadores to his new unit table (with square not stakes) and having attempted to make some factions playable in custom battles, Empire now crashes at the splash screen.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have a really good campaign going in Empire at the moment, and now I can't get at it because of this CTD.

Actually I've managed to make it work to an extent. Light Infantry can't deploy stakes any more and those that could deploy stakes in vanilla can now form square. The only downside seems to be that instead of putting the Square Formation button in place of the Deploy Stakes, it's put it in place of the Skirmish button, meaning my Light Infantry units can no longer skirmish. Any thoughts on how to sort that one?

First of all, good to see an established official forum member taking some steps into TWC, you'll get all the modding help you could want here

Point one: that sample pack is pretty old, I strongly doubt that its compatible with the latest version of Empire.
As for the skirmish button problem, its quite likely that your unit has too many abilities and there isnt room in the UI for both buttons.

That seems logical, but there's a great gaping hole in the abilities buttons on the UI. And I didn't add Square as a new Ability, I first changed all the Deploy Stakes entries to say Form Square, or whatever it is. It just seems that the Square Formation button and Skirmish button have to occupy the centre slot of the abilities section and so the Square is for some reason overriding the Skirmish.
