Default Playing with Medium unit size

Do the campaigns play okay with Medium unit size? Because my PC is kinda old and a bit laggy on Large.

I used to have an old PC and I could only play the game on Medium Unit size. It is fine. Battles don't look quite as grand, but the unit functionality carries over just fine. Also, I actually prefer medium units in city battles. Huge units are especially bad in city battles. Take forever to get trough the gate, etc.

Yeah, I really think the game was designed to work with Medium better. The mod in general runs much better on it, and the only RTW mods that are always too laggy are the heavily scripted ones (basically EB and RTR). XGM seems like it will be fine with the medium size.

You guys might have a point, but nothing beats seeing huge armies clashing on the battlefield

I play xgm with huge unit size and all the AI cities are depopulated. I think my next game may be large or medium.

As yiplong notes, huge units will result in some AI settlements being depopulated. Medium or small units will result in somewhat faster growth rates, but otherwise won't make a difference to gameplay. If you want to play with huge units you could try changing the farming bonuses on government buildings in export_descr_buildings.txt.

wouldn't smaller unit sizes require larger city garrisons to achieve equivalent levels of happiness too?

isnt there a script that increases population growth and decreases the ammount of happiness units give on larger unit sizes?
i mean it does seem like something that would be there
"I, Pinkie Pie, declare that these treats are fit for a king, or a queen, or a princess!"
"Me? Ruin? I'm not the ruiner, I'm the ruinee! Or is it ruinness? Ruinette?"
"She's ahead of the litter all right. The pick of the litter. The cat's pajamas. Oh wait. Why would Applejack take some poor kitty's pj's? That's not very sporting of her."
"More balloons! No, that's too many balloons. More candy! No, less candy. Ooh! I know! Streamers!"
"Oh my gosh. Hold on to your hooves – I am just about to be brilliant!"

piranha45: Not sure about that. I always thought the game adjusted the garrison effect for unit size, but you might be right.

One other small difference is that it's easier to move population from one city to another with huge units.

martin616: Unfortunately the game doesn't automatically adjust growth rates for different unit sizes and there is no way to detect the unit size setting from a script.

maybe you can make 4 options in the installer with edited files:
    export_descr_buildings.txt -> population growth
export_descr_unit.txt -> is_peasant attribute for all units for large and huge unit size (garrison)
    Sorry for my English...
