Default Social Security Surplus / IOU depository

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100314/..._security_ious

I heard an old geezer once tell me that the government owed social security an enourmous amount of money and that the program, from a financial point of view, has never been in trouble since 1980s. The government however has raided the surplus funds for decades and left a huge depository of IOUs in its wake. This article seems to back up the claims he made.

when you add in the interest that the US owes Social security each year, the program actually gained a few billion this year.

This is not really a current news item in any real sense. If you wish to discuss the social security system viability, I think this is better done with a thread in the Academy.
