    Default Record battles

    Hello!

I know it mighn't be the best place to ask but surrounded by so much knowledge I couldn't resist it
Basically what I want to do is to record my campaign battles.

Some people out there use 3rd party software to record their screen output, that's nice and if you can recommend some good one I'd be glad to have a look at them but I know they have their limitations.

I've figured out that if I play a custom battle I have the option to save the replay at the end of it , but that doesn't happen if I play a campaign battle. Why is that? Also I found a video tutorial >here< about how to edit these replays. When I load a replay the interface looks similar but I don't have all those blue stuffs on my screen and basically if I'm doing like in the video it just doesn't work. It is quite frustrating because the videos look promising!

There are a good few battle videos on internet so I imagine there must be a solution!

Sorry, but I've never done any of that. Anyone else know how?

I agree, there's got to be a way but I don't know how to go about doing so.

You can record campaign battles with Fraps, but the full version costs 30 bucks, and you have to record your campaign battles as you play them. That being said, its very high quality, and it has never let me down!

The free version of fraps lets you record for 1 minute at a time. The only problem with FRAPS and any video recording software is that unless you have a huge hard drive or record in very low quality a 30 min battle will eat up a huge amount of disk space. Recording every battle, well you will need TB's of space for a whole campaign. I usually just use windows movie maker for editing, i know its crap but its very easy to use and is free.

I think its only 30 seconds for the trial, believe me, I used it a lot. And the taking up tons of space is fine as long as you only play for about an hour, and then delete the fraps files after you make the WMM files. But yeah, one clip about 12-16 minutes long is 3.90 gigs.

I'd love just to use the built-in editor the guy is using in the video, the big problem is that you don't have the option at the end of a campaign battle: "save replay". I sent a ticket on the sega support website but little hope on that side... Any idea?

Ok Here is the reply I got from Sega, not very helpful...
    Hi Renaud,

Thank you for contacting SEGA Support.

Unfortunately we do not have any information regarding the reason behing this decision.

I suspect it would be because the replay are not recording the battle in the same sense as a movie but only the commands given, so the outcome of the battle can be slightly different.

However I recommend that you visit:

Here you will find the latest news and information on the Total War serie.

I would have to say Fraps is your best bet. It does record in not-so-perfect quality though, and as mentioned before can make quite a big file. I've tried other from download.com but of course they all have certain limits. If you follow the link to my Prussian guide for Empire Total War in my signature, the videos in the guide are recorded via Fraps.
