Default How Do You Feel About Bilingual Signs in Your Own Country?

During my travels around Asia, it's been of great convenience to myself and no doubt to others, that many signs are bilingual; in both the native script and english. Even on bus stops, trains, shops etc, bilingual signs abound everywhere and i reflected that if the reverse were the case, how would one take it if one's own country started introducing bilingual signs?

Most of the native/indigeneous Asians i worked with didnt seem to mind about the dual use of script-which is quite a contrast to some australians i know back home who insist that those who come here learn the language and know it.

    So, what's your take this?

Bilingual signs? I see nothing wrong with it. In here we have signs in Hebrew, Arabic and English - And they're considering adding Russian. I see no reason why not also, I mean, further convenience - Better for everyone, no?

I voted If it makes foreigners' lives easier, why the heck not?!

Though I wish people wouldn't care about culture and the like and just adopt one language for the whole world.

English is pretty much the global language. Granted, not all know it, but you can't force a people that use their language to distinguish themselves as a group or take pride in it due to it being their own unique feature to take one, specific language for the entire world.

I never understood people who would complain about foreigners having to learn our language. Especially since my country has no official language. I say who cares, a few extra words on a sign. Maybe you'll learn something too?

    *Nationalistic Asian Mode*

NO! people who come here ought to learn OUR (2nd Official) language and like it. Hence, learn English.

The sign "Ped Xing" is not a historical chinese landmark or a some weird tsinoy hero. Its Pedestrian Crossing. So for that gullible tourist there, stop taking photographs, coz you'll find alot more of 'em along Roxas Boulevard.

(Its clickable by the way....An S2 overhaul mod.)

Seriously. Click it. Its the only overhaul mod that's overhauling enough to bring out NEW clans

You come to my country, you adopt my language, culture and mannerisms, or you get the hell out.

Canada. And with that, I'd like to add a little addendum to my previous post- I don't mind official bilingualism in regards to the French population, its simply unassimilated immigrants that irk me.

    That is the extremist option.
The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.

If your country's first language isn't English, then yeah, the signs should be bilingual. Signs around borders should also have the language of the neighboring country.

Why not? It's easier for me when the signs are in both Urdu and English, as my Urdu kinda sucks

over here it's the otehr way

signs are in english, and also in irish. Not many people speak Irish, and it's nobody's first language. They should let it die already.

There are actually quite a few people that speak it, at least by me. It's by no means dead, though the people that speak it don't speak it all the time. Besides, it's the official language of the Republic, and it's our language. That's part of our cultural heritage and I'm very glad that we're not letting it die.
