    Default Rate my build

I'm thinking of building a new PC. Only obstacle is my wife (who is a HUGE obstacle ).

    Goals:

    • Construct a value box: I don't need cutting edge. I want the most bang for my buck.
    • Anyway, I'd like to keep it under $800, ideally under $700.
    • I want a system that will last ~4 years.

What I do with my PC:

    • Innardnets browsing
    • Hobby-level programming
    • Hobby-level photo/texture editing
    • Gaming: mostly RPGs and TBS, e.g. Dragon Age, TW, Oblivion, Football Manager 2010, etc.
    • Most commonly run apps: Firefox, Foxit, MS Visual Studio 2008, MS Office 2007, Open Office, GIMP

    Proposed Build:

You'll note there's no HD. I haven't decided what to do about that yet.

Thoughts? I'm especially eager to hear where you think I'm over doing it.

A system that would last 4 years and stay up to date... technology adapts so quickly, I doubt any system could future proof itself for 4 years, but on the whole that's good budget system, except for the power supply. It's overkill. You could get away with the TX 550, or the TX 650 if you plan on crossfiring your 5770's in the future.

No offence but if your wife is such a "huge obstacle" to tackle (your words not mine!) then you really ought to tell her to lose some pud as being overweight is dangerous for her health.

Anyway as for the build in question, like your wife it's a good solid all round build however I wouldn't use a case like that and not when the Antec Three Hundred costs about the same and has fantastic cooling and solid build quality (just look at the number of reviews it has).

As for a hard drive the best drives on the market as the Samsung Spinpoint F3 500gb or 1Tb drives. You can can a bit of money by getting a smaller PSU, 750watts is overkill for a Core i5/HD5770 setup.

    Good luck.

I saw that one coming, but I thought insisting that she's not fat was a case of "Thou dost protest too much."

Thanks. I'll definitely take a look at your recommendations.

@mrcrusty: I don't expect it to stay up-to-date for 4 years. I just want it to be usable for 4 years--meaning that it's good enough now that I can expect it to run the software I use for a while. I'm lucky that I'm not into FPSs in that regard. I'm at the point now, eg, where my Intel Pentium D(ual Core) 2.66GHz, 3GB RAM setup can run everything I want, it just runs newer programs slowly.
