    The list of Roman gentes:

    • Gens Ivnia
    • Gens Sempronia
    • Gens Ivlia
    • Gens Octavia
    • Gens Aemilia
    • Gens Caecilia
    • Gens Cornelia
    • Gens Clavdia
    • Gens Valeria
    • Gens Calpvrnia
    • Gens Licinia
    • Gens Avrelia
    • Gens Cvria
    • Gens Fabia
    • Gens Papiria
    • Gens Sergia
    • Gens Atilia

The gens trait you see when you look at the trait list on the FM only affect the possibilities of getting other traits and stuff.
The actual family names of the Romani (ie cognomen) are hidden traits
The chances of getting an FM with any of those traits are random, really.

The complete list is in the mentioned file, search for 'EB - ROMANI'.

On your question about the gentes, I don't know which are included and why, you may search the trait file, as the names for the Romans are constructed through traits.

Well in all fairness the Romans were renown also for their distinctive lack or creativity and conservatism when it came to names.

I didn`t mean on their names. I mean on gentes because EB team use just a few Roman gentes in the mod. Romans didn`t had much names(preanomina) but they had very much last names (gens).
There are some of them which are left out:

    Marivs
    Sertorivs
    Antonivs
    Aelivs
    Flaminivs
    Afranivs
    Albinivs
    Anneivs
    Appvleivs
    Aqvllivs
    Canvleivs
    Cassivs
    Fvrivs
    Lollivs
    Minvcivs
    Pompeivs
    Qvinctilivs
    Septimivs
    Servilivs
    Svlpicivs
    Vipsanivs
    Pomponivs

    and many others

It's impossible to include all the gentes for one simple reason. The Family tree is shaped like a dynasty, so the only people who matter are the "movers and shakers". True, it's more realistic to represent all the gentes, but it will be really difficult to keep track of who is who. In any given moment the family members represented in the tree form a very small part of the ruling body of Roma. Remember, the Senators were 300. Right now I have about 30 FMs and only 3 of them are senators. Now imagine how many FMs would you have if you had all 300 senators.

Isn't the gens also related to acquisition of certain traits? If im not mistaken, that would mean having to link all those names to a set of possible traits, which I would imagine would be based on historical precedent and so on, one gens made good generals, another good politicians, etc.

I don't think the number of gens is the problem, more the work involved. I think we need someone who knows how the family tree was altered (a modder or someone involved in the work preferably) to answer our questions.

Open Rome - Total War/data/descr_names.txt, then do a search for EB - Romani (or just Romani, doesn't matter), and it'll direct you to the start of the Roman names section
