    Default i7 Extreme 980x

new revision of the i7Extreme for the same price but with 6 cores

    http://www.guru3d.com/news/core-i7-9...in-march-2010/

"Intel is all set to release a processor with Six cores as early as March 2010 already, yes that might be during CeBIT then. And yes you heard me right...six cores and thus 12 threads.

What we originally expected to be named a Core i9 processor is going to be called a Core i7 980X with the X for Extreme (and thus unlocked). The six core or hexacore processor goes by the codename "Gulftown". The Core i7 980X will be compatible with X58 chipset based motherboards which will require only a BIOS update. Gulftown supports 1066MHz DDR3 memory and has a TDP of 130W.

The processor operates at a frequency of 3.06 GHz (according to the latest rumor) and features a massive 12MB L3 cache. Again, Gulftown will be socket 1366 compatible and work with all X58 motherboards after a BIOS upgrade."

the i7 920 is just as future proof with an OC. 4 cores at 3.8Ghz, should be able to handle any game for a long, long time. Not to mention the i7920 is $700 cheaper.... You could get that dual CPU EVGA board and 2, i7 920's for less than the i7 980X.

8 cores and a quad SLI motherboard is a better deal than a single 6 core CPU. Although 8 CPU cores with 16 threads would be a waste of money too.....

    Are there 4x3.8 Ghz
or 3.8 Ghz delivered through 4 cores?

Siroc has a point, it won't be particularly useful for gaming.

I mean, there are very few games where a quad core makes a considerable difference, for most games, dual core is still fine. It's going to be a year or two before any game will strain the CPU enough or be optimised to get decent improvement with a hex core.

No, as I just said, that dual CPU board and two i7 920's would cost as much as the i7 980X but they would outperform it, so even if you had the money you'd be better off with two i7 920's.

I was referring to overclocking an i7 920, which would give you 4, 3.8 Ghz. cores.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with it as I don't strictly use my PC gaming, it's performance in H.264 encoding is very impressive (don't start recommending video encoding over the video card because it's crap) and seems to scale really well and as for games it's just as quick if not faster then the Core i7 975 which costs almost the same (clock for clock) and is more efficient to boots thanks to 32nm.

To be fair I thought the price was going to be a lot worse then what it's turn out to be I thought it would be priced at about $1200 to $1500 but I quick check on Google and I saw listed at one place below $1000. I don't think it's any more expensive the Core i7 975X plus you get 2 extra cores to boot.

Still waaay more than I would pay for any CPU. (Unless I knew it would still rock 10 years in future)
