[DM/DMUC] Issues & Solutions Thread (Read the first post!) - up to version 5.5.1!!!
Important note: This thread intends to help you finding solutions for your DM/DMUC issues. It contains general guides on how to handle DM and DMUC issues, a collection of known solutions for the most frequent DMUC problems and tips on how to post your issues in the best way. If you still have issues after reading through this post precisely and following the instructions, feel free to report your problem. Furthermore you should bear in mind that the mentioned instructions and solutions only concern the latest version of DM/DMUC. So consider that you always use the recent version of DM/DMUC.
General Guide: "I have a problem with DM. What to do?"
1) First check if DM has been installed properly.
a) There should be a file called darthmod.pack (or darthmodlite.pack, it depends on whether you use DarthMod Empire or DarthMod Empire Lite!) in your ETW data folder (C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data)
b) The ETW user script should contain the line mod darthmod.pack; (or mod darthmodlite.pack;) at its top.
Go into the ETW script folder:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username here)\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts
Windows Vista/Seven:
C:\Users\(Your username here)\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts
[If you cannot see the AppData folder, it's still hidden. Follow this tutorial to show hidden folders.]
and open the file user.empire_script.txt to check if the line mentioned above is on the top of the script. If this is not the case, move it to the top. If there is no user.empire_script.txt, create it, add the line mod darthmod.pack; (or mod darthmodlite.pack;) and save it.
c) There should be one UPC file in your ETW data folder (C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data). The names of the UCP files start with unit_pack_compatibility_project_[...] . If there are two (e.g. one german and one english UCP file), delete one. If there is none, download the latest UCP file of your favourite language here and copy it to your ETW data folder.
d) If you use the darthed GC starting position file (startpos.esf), copy it again to the following folder and overwrite the existing one:
C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data\campaigns\main
2) If there are still issues with DM after checking the installation, you should try to clean up ETW.
a) Go into your ETW data folder (C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data) and delete any files which doesn't belong to the vanilla ETW or DarthMod.
b) Verify your ETW files with Steam. Open Steam, open the properties of ETW by right-clicking on ETW at your "My games" list, switch to the topic "Local files" and let Steam check the integrity of the game cache.
3) If your problem still appears, feel free to report your issue.
General Guide: "I have a problem with DMUC. What to do?"
2) If there is no solution for your issue or the suggested solution doesn't work, continue with going into the DIAGNOSTICS menu of the DMUC launcher, enable the diag options by clicking on ENABLE ADV DIAG OPTIONS, reset the scripts by clicking on RESET DMUC USER SCRIPTS and delete the preferences script by clicking on DELETE PREF SCRIPT FILE.
3) If both things, the specific solutions and the general diagnostics, don't solve your problem, you should try to reinstall DMUC by following these steps:
a) Deinstall DMUC by executing the Uninstall_DMUC.exe located in your ETW folder (C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war). Note: If you use the UAC, don't forget to run the uninstaller as an administrator!
b) Delete all your scripts. Go into your ETW script folder:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username here)\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts
Windows Vista/Seven:
C:\Users\(Your username here)\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts
[If you cannot see the AppData folder, it's still hidden. Follow this tutorial to show hidden folders.]
and empty it. Delete every file/folder.
c) Go into your ETW data folder (C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data) and delete any file which doesn't belong to the vanilla ETW.
d) Verify your ETW files with Steam. Open Steam, open the properties of ETW by right-clicking on ETW at your "My games" list, switch to the topic "Local files" and let Steam check the integrity of the game cache.
e) Install DMUC. Note: If you use the UAC, don't forget to run the Installer as an administrator!
4) If your problem still appears, feel free to report your issue.
If your game is vanilla, even though you have installed DMUC and you launch it by using the DMUC launcher, you lost one of your DMUC scripts. This can be caused by several things. In most cases users lose their scripts when getting a CTD, because the script which was loaded to play DMUC gets often deleted when the game crashes.
Solution: You have to reset your user scripts:
1) Start the DMUC launcher,
2) Click on OPTIONS,
3) Click on DIAGNOSTICS,
4) Click on ENABLE ADV DIAG OPTIONS,
5) Click on RESET DMUC USER SCRIPTS,
6) Now a command window should open and you just have to press a various key to reset your scripts.
Note: If this doesn't work, you should try to replace the whole script folder.
The DMUC script folder is the following one:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts\DMUC
Windows Vista/Seven:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts\DMUC
[If you cannot see the AppData folder, it's still hidden. Follow this tutorial to show hidden folders.]
Download this file, delete the DMUC folder and replace it with the downloaded folder.
"I get CTDs at the start-up of battles/campaigns!"
This concerns only people who get CTDs at the start-up of battles or campaigns (not during battles/campaigns).
- "The Uprising Campaign crashes at the start-up!"
The UpC requires the Warpath DLC! If you don't own the Warpath DLC, you cannot use the UpC and it'll crash at the start-up.
Solution: Buy the Warpath DLC or don't use the UpC.
"I get CTDs while loading my savegame!"
This issue can be caused by several things. These are the three most frequent reasons:
- You lost your campaign script.
If you lose your GC/UC/CC/UpC/ULC script, the game will be vanilla and of course you cannot load DMUC savegames with the vanilla ETW. A proof way to check if ETW is vanilla is to go into the custom battle menu and to check the range of the line infantry. If your game is vanilla, the range will be 70 and if DarthMod is active, it should be 110.
Solution: Check out the suggested solution of "I've installed DMUC, but my game is vanilla!".
- Your savegame is too old and not compatible with your current version of DMUC.
If you've just installed a new version of DMUC and your old savegame doesn't work, the reason is pretty clear: it is not compatible with this new version of DMUC.
Solution:
You have two opportunities:
- Deinstalling the new version of DMUC and reinstalling the old one you used before. Now your old savegame should work properly.
- Keeping your new version of DMUC and starting a new campaign.
It's your choice ...
- You changed some serious game settings within the campaign.
If you start a new campaign with particular settings, you should not change them seriously till the campaign is finished, because if you do so, your savegame maybe won't work anymore. Of course you can change all ETW settings and the audio and graphics settings in the DMUC launcher. But changing the gameplay options in the DMUC launcher could be critical (it depends on the option). And what you should never do if you don't want to lose your campaign savegame:
- removing DMUC pack files from the campaign script
- editing DMUC pack files
- adding further mods to the scripts
- using the AUM switcher sub-mod
If you do one of these things, you'll have to start a new campaign.
Solution: Just revert your settings to the last ones, which worked properly with your savegame.
"I get CTDs during battles/campaigns!"
If you get CTDs during battles or campaigns (not at start-up!), this is in 95% related to your hardware.
Hereafter are some reasons why your game could crash to desktop:
- Your hardware settings are too high.
Empire Total War and especially DMUC is very hardware hungry. If you stress your CPU (or your computer in common) too much (e.g. by playing a battle with 20000 units), your PC will crash. Especially if you stress your RAM too much ... it will produce failures and the Empire.exe will crash.
Solutions:
- Try lower hardware settings.
- Try the DM Normal Unit Size Sub-Mod by Tharoth (this mod doesn't affect the UC!).
- Your PC can't handle the smoke mod.
This problem is very simliar to the one above. Some computers cannot handle the smoke mod which is included in DMUC. Maybe they are too weak, maybe the graphics driver has some trouble with the smoke.
Solution: Turn off the smoke mod in the graphics menu of the DMUC launcher.
- The Drum & Fife sub-mod produces crashes on your PC.
Some computers seem to have problems with the D&F sub-mod. The reasons are unknown.
Solution: Don't use D&F.
- Your on-board sound card produces crashes.
This issue has absolutely nothing to do with DM or DMUC. It's a bug of Empire Total War itself.
Solution: Update your sound card driver or use a dedicated sound card if an update doesn't solve your problem. Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that a new sound card will solve your issue!
"After uninstalling DMUC, my vanilla ETW doesn't work anymore!"
If your vanilla ETW doesn't work anymore after uninstalling DMUC, there are probably some remaining DMUC scripts/files.
Solution: Delete the remaining scripts/files.
1) Delete all DMUC scripts. Go into your ETW script folder:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username here)\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts
Windows Vista/Seven:
C:\Users\(Your username here)\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts
[If you cannot see the AppData folder, it's still hidden. Follow this tutorial to show hidden folders.]
and delete every file/folder except the file preferences.empire_script.txt.
2) Go into your ETW data folder (C:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data) and delete every file which belongs to DMUC.
3) Verify your ETW files with Steam. Open Steam, open the properties of ETW by right-clicking on ETW at your "My games" list, switch to the topic "Local files" and let Steam check the integrity of the game cache.
"I have graphic issues!"
Graphic issues have nothing to do with DMUC. They are caused by ETW itself or your graphic card. Nevermind what problems you have, try the solutions below.
Solutions:
- Update your graphics driver. You can find the latest version of ATi drivers here and the newest NVidia drivers here. Don't forget to uninstall your old driver and to restart your computer before installing the new driver!
- Switch the shader settings from 3.0 to 2.0 in the ETW graphics menu. The 3.0 shader models seem to cause issues on some PCs.

Are these still good for DM 5.5?
Sure, you can use any version of UPC with any version of Darthmod, but I'd recommend to use the recent version of UPC, because there may be missing unit names or something like that, if your UPC is too old ...
It has no effect, whether you use UPC 5.6 or UPC 5.7 with DM 5.5 ...

um ok this update looks awsome. just 1 question why cant i play denmark no more? it used to be in the custom campaign but all i see is a few emergent factions. how do i fix this?
Re: [DM/DMUC] Issues & Solutions Thread (Read the first post!)
Hi jmack - you will need to download and use the Custom Campaign switcher which allows you to play Denmark.
Each unique campaign required changes to to the startpos and to incorporate the requests that we had the switcher was the only method available to allow this, but it works fine

When I try to download DMUC 5.5 the first link is still on authorization mode.
When I try on last link to download on torrent it is 18.3 KB only. And the other torrent download button is a radio file which has nothing to do with DMUC file.

I hope that helps - also the drums7 fife mod and the classical music mod are really great and immense intensify your game feeling...
Hope that solves your issue
Just a hint before install - make sure you have a clean vanilla version (verify the local cache/ Steam option) - delete in the main Script folder the DMUC folder - and play one turn Vanilla - after install according the installation instructions - its really easy to do!
Hear you....

Please forgive me My Dark Lord but I have a question. In following you over to The American Revolution Mod will it overwrite DM 5.5 Commander? Will I be able to run it along with DM or will I need to use Mod Manager or something like that? I'd love to be able to retain the masterpiece you've created here and also partake of what's to come.

Hi Bob,
I designed all the installers and launchers for both the DMUC and TAR.
Both mods can be installed at the same time and you can still play them seperately. You just can't run them at the sametime. That would be bad.
The latest version of DMUC even has a DEACTIVAE DMUC PACK FILES options that awolla you to quick remove the dmuc files out of the etw\data folder in to a storage folder. This feature will be coming to TAR 2.0 as well.
Re: [Announcement] DarthMod: Gold Status and future development...
I must state that I asked my question incorrectly. I am running the basic DarthMod and not DMUC so will I be able to keep both? Please forgive my error.
