CNET (a reputable source) likes it, but the readers aren't so crazy. http://download.cnet.com/DriverMax/3...-10572602.html

    Here are some alternatives: http://alternativeto.net/desktop/drivermax/

I don't think this is one of those issues where there's a clear cut answer. DriverMax looks legit, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

    Pros:
+You'll have utility that auto updates your drivers.
+Your devices will normally be as secure and as efficient as possible.

    Neutrals:
\Many of your drivers will be updated automatically by Windows anyway, without a driver utility.

    Cons:
-You're likely not to pay attention to what's getting updated and what's not.
-Sometimes new drivers can be worse than the old ones or conflict with your software (e.g., new Nvidia drivers and ETW).
-You've got another background utility sucking up resources and slowing down startup.

Ultimately, I don't think you can go wrong either way. It's more about how much control you like to have over your system. You can always try it for a while and uninstall it if you don't like it.

No, I'm actually with ChaobSirac on this one. I don't mess with drivers unless I have to, which is rarely. Given that you're already having problems, I'd say that you gave it a good try, but it sounds like way more hassle than it's worth.

I strongly recommend staying away from programs that automatically install drivers for your hardware for several reasons.

First of all: many people have come here for help due to such software installing drivers that caused problems with their system, the worst part is that it is very difficult to find out what the update was that caused the problems, unless you manually install updates yourself it can be difficult to even discover which driver is causing the problem and where it is that you can un-install it again.

Most of the updates those type of programs download don't improve anything anyway. Upgrading your audio driver for example is more likely to cause you problems then give you better sound.

Also those types of programs will install new drivers upon release, many drivers have problems that aren't discovered until after they are released (such as the last version of NVidia drivers causing certain cards to overheat and fry). So your better off waiting a while to make sure the drive is stable and save yourself complications.

Another big issue, is many times those types of programs will go ahead and download drivers that aren't for any part of your PC at all.

When it comes to computer drivers I go with the philosophy "If it aint broke don't fix it" in regards to non-windows updates and non-video card updates. If you have a reason for needing a certain driver (new GPU driver to give you better support for newer games) then go ahead and download em' yourself, at least then if you do encounter a problem it's easy to un-install as you know exactly what caused your problem.

I'll pitch in and agree that you shouldn't be auto-updating drivers on Windows. New drivers are sometimes an improvement, sometimes not. It's not worth the risk until you actually run into a problem that upgrading a driver might fix. Same goes for BIOS updates.
