Default 211 BC CTD, but only for battlemap

If, when army of Pontus attacks my army, I choose to fight on the battlemap, the game CTDs. The loading screen appears, but there is no progress bar and after a number of seconds I get the 'has stopped working' message from Windows.

If I choose auto-resolve, I get through to my next turn.

I've deleted map.rwm, put the folder on my anti-virus's exclusion list. Made a new save; deleted the auto and quick saves.

In an assault defence just before, I see a varying number of my men in the city; 220, 218, 216, 214, if that's a clue.

Winter 211 BC. Parthia. RTEPE (non modswitch) + CTD Fix.

I know I could just auto-resolve, but I always fight all my battles myself, and I think I can do better than the two-thirds casualties the computer gives me.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Are there reinforcements involved?

Sounds like AutoResolve is your only solution, the other option is to put the save somewhere safe and then reinstall RTW and then put the save back in

    What does that mean?
Frankly I`ve never heard this before so no idea what could help. If you just want to get over the battle and not lose many man use the auto win cheat with only part of your units:

The enemy attacked a city of mine that had 220 men in its garrison.

However, after the crash, reloading the autosave would show it had only 218. On the next reload it would be 216, and so on.
