Well, if your commanding a Roman Army at Early Years.
It's composition should be:
A General
4 Hastati's
4 Principe's
4 Triarri
4 Velites
2 or 4 Equites
Line up like this, Hastati in a Single Line Formation behind them not too close in the same formation will be the Princepe's then the Velites put the Triarii's to the left and ride side of the end of your Armies so avoid being flanked.
It's all about timing really, once the enemy armies front line's about to charge to your front about 1 second before they clash that's where you throw your Hastati's Pila then once they crowd around mostly because they're not in Guard Mode they'll keep on coming and coming and coming, while your Hastati's holds it order your Velites and Princepe's to open fire and pepper them with Pila's, then the finishing would be to flank them with Cavalry.
Kinda like Alexander's "Hammer and Anvil" Tactic. If your using Barbarian Armies can't really help you 'cause I don't know a thing about them lol.
Hellenic States are mostly about keeping it together tight and in one formation, that's what I seen that is.. lol.
If you are fighting with an Hellenic army perform the 'Hammer and Anvil' tactic. That is, maintain the line with your phalangites in the center, flexible troops (sword hoplites or so) on the flanks to overcome being outflanked and then smash with cavalry through (I prefer) the enemy's right flank, then attack them in the rear (or right from behind). That's as short as the Hellenic tactics can get.
You may find it worth to study a few battles shortly (to get a better understanding). I suggest the Battle of Gaugamela, Battle of Leuctra and the Battle of Marathon (Battle of Raphia can also be a good one!).

also look here,
Greeks: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...hlight=tactics
Romans (again): http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...hlight=tactics
you should know the limits of your troops and the enemies morale once you've gotten the ABC's just use hammer and anvil strikes and if your an infantry guy envelop them and watch them fall down easily
it also depends on your troop quality and of course your main man
for the Romans just hold your ground and advance slowly when in range just pepper them with Pila and arrows, smash them with shields on front and cavalry flank end of story
For the greeks the hoplites seems like a good choice for the main bulk. they are armoured, heavy , anti cavalry and can smash infantry lines not to mention very flexible whats not to like

be aggressive and take the fight to the enemy
always try to fight on even ground if the enemy tries to camp on a hill. Doesnt matter if you have to take a de-tour. Better to have tired troops on even footing than fresh troops fighting uphill (if the walk up a hill does not make them tired in the first place)
When you're playing a greek faction and you're attacked from multible sides make a square with hoplites, in the square youre put youre archers out side of the square put you'r peltasts and then another lager square of hoplites with you'r cavalry circling around attacking the enemy troops in the back. Turn skirmish mode of, both for archers and peltasts, they're protected by the hoplites.![]()

The whole first rank of your army should march forward ten paces then cut off their own heads to show the enemy the strength of your resolve, the enemy will be so scared by your tactical genius that they will turn and run away.
i think pergamum is the best faction in the game in terms of unit roster: heavy infantry(roman style), pergamum city hoplites(ideal for protecting the flanks against enemy cavalry), macedonian heavy cavalry, plus lots of missile units(i prefer mercenary barbarian archers, or syrian archers for their long range missile)
You must also always have some kind of suicide charge, for example just randomly charge your general into the front line of a largely phalanx army. You have to match every suicide charge of the AI with one of your own, that way the AI wont feel like such an idiot and you will feel more superior when you win.![]()
for the romans id rather be on the defensive so that the enemy will attack me instead and my legions can have the first strike throwing Pila instead of marching
Thank you for your tipswhen i play as the romans today, i will try to use the tactics

also try and adapt your army composition to the opponents you are fighting. i am still in the middle of the long campaign playing macedon and i had lots of trouble destroying the romans because of there good infantry. so play to your strengths - as romans your strength will always lay with your heavy infantry, not cavalry.
as hellenistic factions your strength lies with your hoplites and cavalry.![]()
