    Default Replay

Arrghh!... I had an awesome fight taking armenia and the last people left were mine and the enemy general who were fighting which is just pure awesome. I saved the replay and it comes out totaly diffrent to what i did in the actual game the walls didnt collapse and my general died in the middle of the battle. Any reason why its different coz i really wanted to take a few screenys of that...

I have no idea. Are you sure you saved it under the right name and are you looking in the right folder?

I had the same problem... my troops behaved in totally different way they did under my control.

I haven't actually tried watching a replay myself, but I seem to remember having read that replays aren't actually a replay of the battle, but rather an reenactment by the AI. It'll be the same location, and the same armies, but from the second the replay start, it's just two AI controlled armies fightning each other. Even if you watch the same replay twice, the battles will most likely not be the same.

    Lol ...
But there was the option to re-fight the battle after you watched the replay, right?

Yeah, its not like an AoE battle that replays exactly or some other recorded games. It just sets the forces the same and allows you to fight the battle trying different strategies or just setting up for screenshots. Not the best solution to me but I guess this type of engine doesn't lend itself well to total recreation of battles.

I just tried some different replays out and it seems that in small battles everything happens exactly as it should but in bigger siege like battles it doesn't...

How small of battles do you mean? Is there a file size issue maybe? Is it duration that matter or the # of units. I've only ever tried to replay large battles but I might load a couple of small ones just to see.

My unit scale is on huge and i had half just less than half a stack vs just over a stack and it turned out the same.

Like Ichon, the game only saves the paths the units went, so basically when you save it and go to watch it its the computer vs the computer, it doesn't do what you did, lets say if you got a close victory and watched the replay you might get a close defeat instead, using Cine-Ed is a better solution for this as it knows you got Close Victory and tries to get it...

Does this also go for Custom Battle replays?

It isn't necessarly the ~-labeled-key on your keyboard that opens it up. If you're not using a us/english layout it can be something totally different. I open my console with the key next to the L-Key. Go "ö"...

Did you make any changes to ANY game files between replays?

Yup, this comes true with German keyboards (most Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German - and so on - people should have this kind of keyboard).

@Kamakai... did you notice that to open console by pressing ~ you need to press Alt Gr in the same time? As well as if that button is @.

As far as I know, most British keyboards have ~ as console opening key.

So the battles should play out perfectly as they were fought? Or just the starting armies are the same and AI fights? Because when I tried that it wasn't an exact replay but now I wonder if I loaded a dif AI or made some change that still allowed battle to play but not a true recording?

It's not a recording. The replay is just a record of all the commands given during the battle, both yours and the AI's. The outcomes can be quite different at times.

I think the replays try and make it as close to what happened, I think the AI takes the same paths your units took. Like if your catapault attacked a wall and destroyed it in 5 shots with every rock hitting the wall, on the replay coz it's just copying what you did a few rocks may miss and the wall might be something like 95 percent health if any of that makes sense.
