    Default ships too slow?

    Hello,

I am trying Rome Surrectum at the moment and I kinda like the zoomed in campaign map, with crowded indy towns and all but one thing freaked me out enough to stop playing... The ship speed.

I started as Syracuse as it is the first time I've seen this faction playable and I thought I'd be nice and warm squeezed in between Rome and Carthage ^^ I start with a spy, a diplomat and several armies and generals, and they all have a pretty wide area of move (the spy could nearly walk Syracuse-Lylibaeum-Syracuse in one turn). A few turns pass, i decide to send my diplomat abroad to sign some treaties here and there, build up a ship, load the diplomat and... get screwed! The ship area of move is the same as in Vanilla!!! The problem is the map is way zoomed in so it is like if the ship go way slower... I figured out that it is actually faster to unload the diplomat in Italy and make him walk all around than to ship it to Greece...

Come on the game is 2 turns / year and it can't take several years to sail from Sicily to Greece, even back then! Tell me if I've got it wrong.

You've got it wrong, the movement is good actually. The ship can go further than the initial green area

yes you can move beyond the green area, also the ship movements decrease if your diplomat is almost out of movement points

There is an exploit to get around that. Just highlight all the ships in the fleet and you can move as far as the ship will the lowest MP can move.

I cheated the system and was able to get my army from Iberia to Jerusalem in 1 turn. All you do is line up lots of ships with full movement points spaces as far away as they can move minus a few tiles. Then move the fleet with the army into the next fleet. Withdraw the original fleet, so you have your army staying on the new fleet with full MP's in the boats. Rinse and repeat until you are on the coast of where you want to go. You won't be able to disembark though since your troops have no MP's.

Ha ha! I had this problem too, but then somebody from the team explained me, that this is not an issue! The visible green area is limited by RTW's engine. So, the game is showing the maximum of the green area, but the movements points allows you to march ever further. Dont worry, only few units (mostly calvary and navy) can go beyond the green area in RSII.

too slow? The ships can cross half the agean in a single turn!

Well with turns at 2/yr it's not that much of an exploit. I love RS's movements, but the Romans I doubt took 1.5 years to get from Rome or Gaul to Asia Minor, Aegyptus or Palestine... Although it is an exploit in that the AI won't be countering with similar ones.

Sort of like using the character_reset cheat, it didn't take a year and a half to get from Rome to Massilia but the AI won't use it to get somewhere faster.
Yes, I hate the fact RTW is out and I still have a Japanese title. Come on now admins- let's get with the program.

I think NTW proves you wrong. The Italic campaign has fairly realistic movements for armies but it's because they uses 2 week's per turn and a massively zoomed in map.

That wouldn't work in RS 2 as we got a huge map covering large parts of the world and 2 turn per year.
Changing it to a 2 week's per turn mod wouldn't work as that would mean campaigns that would take months if not years to complete and we can't zoom in more than what we have already done due to Hardcoded limitations.

So to come to a conclusion TW will never get realistic movements on a large scale map. However mods like PI will have a far more realistic way of movements as they only focus on the Italic Peninsula and Sicily.
