    Default Attacking excommunicated factions

I was playing as Sicily. Planned my campaign well so that Venice would attack me and get excommunicated.

    Pope is also my ally.

So I decided to besiege Venice. What happens? My relationship with the Pope drop to just 2 crosses!

I thought the Pope would like the fact that I am attacking an excommunicated faction, but instead, he hates it. Is this suppose to be correct?

    Venice got 2 crosses left

I believe Venice got excom'd for attacking other catholic factions, including me. They besieged my Bologna, twice.

The Pope should actually love you if Venice is really excommunicated. Probably they aren't, though they might have low favor.

Unrelated to this: If they are excommincated - don't kill their king or the pope will welcome them back into his flock.

My first question would be, how many crosses did you have in the beginning?

Perhaps your papal standing diminishing could have dropped for another reason. Say for instance, lack of conformity to other Papal dealings, such being at war with another christian faction other than Venice, etc, etc. Giving the pope regular tributes (as low as 100 gold for x amount of turns) will see your standing with the pope going up to the top in no time.

Important question to: what does it say when you mouse over the Venetian Papal Favor? It has to say "excommunicated" in combination with a bit more text.

Yes it does say excom. I was shocked because the second I besiege Venice, a message icon came up saying that relationships between me and Venice and the Pope has worsened! It's the fist I've seen of this. In my past experience, attacking excom'd faction is always seen as a good thing in the eyes of the Pope.

It's not too big a problem though. I'm the Pope's biggest sponsor, and in the interest of self preservation, he back to loving me once again.

Also, if you take Excomm'd faction's capital city I believe they are likely to get reconciled.

Capitals have nothing to do with it, except that most Faction Leaders start out in the Capital.

You can afford to mostly ignore the Pope as long as you're above 3 crosses...

Are you sure? Sounds pretty risky to me - my baseline is much higher than that. Violating excommunication warnings nets more then just 3 crosses but I'm working only from memory right now.

When I was playing as Scotland, I decided to take Nottingham early from the English to gain military supremacy, and after I took the castle, the pope called for a ceasefire. The English ignored the pope and attacked and as a result were excommunicated while still sieging Nottingham. I fought them off and the pope liked me less because of it. Two turns later the English attacked the castle again, but this time I let them siege the castle a couple of turns(awaiting rienforcements) and to my surprise I gained papal favor In my mind this was a green light to attack, so I did and was not punished for the offensive.
I guess the pope wasn't quite sure who to side with. It was until I showed him that I wasn't the aggressor did he agree to back the Scottish.

If you are in british islands make abstraction about pope. Even excomunicated make what you wish, you are too far to be in the pope range.

I usually run the gauntlet if Pope/my King's old, then even if I'm excommunicated I'll be back in soon. And it is possible to be on 0/10 without being excommunicated (His Holiness thinks the flames of hell are too good for the Kingdom of England).

Walter, in SS or now in RR-RC I dont give a frakk if pope excom me and I am in britania, not necesary like english, I tend to emigrate there. So, If wanna be a good king, slain celts, and make the perfect kingdom, dont bother about pope. When you enter back on continent can check his holyness the jugular arterial presure or if your king is decrepite and old can disapear in a naval "accident".

Excommunication's fine if there's a crusade on or you can repel one (the best way in my experience is simply to assassinate the leader, then the army goes home).

That was to due the Venitians, not due to the Crusaders. Otherwise their strategy might have worked. Perhaps.
