Default Reputation and what impacts it?

    http://www.twcenter.net/wiki/Reputation-M2TW

I've been using the above link as a guide on what to do or what not to do to keep a good reputation, but I've heard from someone that when he uses assassins he's seen his reputation drop (specifically by checking before and then after), even when the assassins were successful, and even though the article claims that spies/assassins don't impact rep.

How much can Reputation be affected, and for those who have looked into it, can factors that change reputation be added or removed beyond what might be hardcoded?

I don't know the technical aspects, but can testify to the fact that any time I use assassins my rep drops like a stone. Despicable at the least and in a hurry...

Using assassins will drop your rep so will diplomacy if you ask for something inappropriate. These modifiers can be changed through descr_faction_standing & descr_diplomacy.

never really understood why using assassins and spies(?) would drop rep, if im not mistaken they were used by everyone back in those days

Indeed, medieval kings, princes and other "nobles" were very cruel - but that rather made their reputation stronger, they had to be like this to keep authority. Using assasins however wasn't something to be proud of. Ancient Romans on contrary were masters of such "dirty tricks". Other thing, that middle ages' chronicles might not say everything about "rulers' kitchen".

In my opinion, reputation factor in M2TW is weird. I agree, that succesfull use of assasin shouldn't affect it, but treachery of an ally should have worst possible consequences.

On the positive side: do not exterminate the settlements and fight large battles. If you capture couple hundreds enemies and you release them your rep will go up like crazy...

No way to do that when playing as Templar again muslims. I don't bother about reputation, "enjoy" exterminating of settlements to reduce unrest and have to execute prisoners to make enemy weaker. Also I have many assassins. Seljuks had now three last settlements (2 castles and 1 town) and as I murdered their last faction leader, faction got destroyed and these settlements turned to be rebels (no more bombards, no dismounted sipahi lancers...)

It's relatively easy to play through as the Templars by occupying and releasing. You are spamming priests, aren't you? It's the easiest way to get unrest down, and you're going to want to do it anyway. On top of that you can start to generate unrest in Muslim held lands if you have enough of them. The only reason to sack is if you're going to get a decent amount from it, and I haven't always seen buildings get downgraded.

No reason to exterminate as I don't think the public order bonus lasts very long.

As to executing prisoners. I prefer to ransom them back. You can get several thousand florins, which can pay for necessary retraining/recruiting, and you deprive the enemy of funds. Several big battles in a row can bring in a reasonable amount. If they don't pay, well, you execute them anyway. The only reason to execute them is if you absolutely do not want them to be thrown back at you... if you captured a ton of prisoners in battle, odds are you kicked their butts, and you can easily do it again

The only time I executed prisoners was to prevent the survivors from returning to a settlement that I had just crushed, forcing me to lay siege once again.

I support the above with my Rise of the Temple Knights AAR, VH/VH on SS 6.2 (see below).

Very nice thread, awesome work. I play 6.1 with included submods, so my retraining/recruiting is very limited and I cannot (or do not want to) ransom enemies and fight them again and again...

About the priests, I still hold their number at the maximum limit to get religion support (min 50% is necessary). Also I have perfect or outstanding relations with Vatican (for a long time the new Pope is always former Templar Bishop). Take a look at my gameplay (I prefer posting the whole screen, so you can see current structure of my armies and financial situation):

These screenshots are even quite old (Jihhad was scratched after 19 turns and I have destroyed Seljuks yesterday), so I plan to add some new ones...
