Can Rome recruit Spartan Hoplites from her cities?

Something i noticed on the custom battles is that amongst the 35 legions there is Spartan Hoplites, whilst in Campaign I currently own Sparta yet i can't recruit them from there so anyone no whats the deal here?

Interesting to know if you can recruit them from cities in campaign and if so, which cities?

I think you can recruit any city hoplites as long as you have the right barracks at the right city level.

Well in theory yes, but i thought that only works with unique buildings such as temples and shipping ports. When i took over Sparta from the Greeks, the Greek barracks just changed recruit-able units to Roman units, given the level of the barracks and region i could recruit Auxiliary units.

Greece had been recruiting Spartans from here before hand which was giving my Legions grief, so it was definitely available for recruiting.

You can recruit them as long as you haven't got Marian reforms.

I could recruit them before the reforms, then when the reorms happened I couldn't anymore (as I couldn't any other regional units - except the auxilia archers and cavalry, of course). I'm playing the campaign without senate.

Also every faction has access to Spartans in custom battles. I don't know why.

Awesome, thanks Souka, i got my Marian form before i took over Sparta, i tried to make my empire like the Romans did but it's not that easy stretching your self and Legions!

So tempting to modify the file to allow spartan recruitment, but I'm assuming it's far from historically correct?

Go to data folder and open up export_descr_buildings and search for "greek hoplite spartan" You will find 5 entries and these are the two you should edit (check spoiler)

Red bolded part is what you remove and when your done it should look like this.

Remember to make a backup copy of any files you change for safety insurance.

Correct, once the legions were reformed in the imperial reforms all, or at least the vast majority were all trained in the legion way even if not officially a legion, foreign troops were called the auxiliary legions.

Is there a way that you can recruit all the city-hoplites in costum battles?

yes, just go to the export_descr unit and delete the no_custom attribute of the unit you want to add to custom battles.

However there is a cap on how many the game can display so if the unit doesn't show up add no_custom to some of those that are to make rome for the ones you want.
